About the lab
Means & Methods Lab is a directory and reviews site for estimators and precon managers at heavy civil and GC shops who sit through vendor demos, have been told to "look into AI," and need a shortlist they can defend.
What you will find here
One place to see what a construction AI or tech tool says it does, who it is for and what it costs, before the demo call. The site started from a heavy-civil estimating perspective and now covers the whole job, from design and preconstruction through field, safety, equipment, finance and facilities. The name is a nod to "means and methods," the contractor's own choice of how work gets built.
- Tool directory: 338 tool pages with what the vendor says the tool does, who it is for, pricing as published, sources and the date we last checked.
- Comparisons: 886 side-by-side pages of vendor-published facts. No winners declared.
- Articles (51) and guides (30): where AI sits in a workflow and the questions to ask a vendor.
- Pricing index: which vendors publish prices and which are quote-only.
- Member reviews and the forum: what people who use the tools actually think.
How the pages are built
Tool, compare, article and pricing pages are desk research from public sources, mostly the vendor's own website. Every page links its sources and shows when the facts were last checked. Desk research from vendor sites: we do not score or rank them. Accuracy, speed, savings or ROI numbers that a vendor publishes are the vendor's claims, and we label them that way or leave them out.
The full process is on the methodology page.
Reviews are the core
Desk research can tell you what a vendor promises. Only people who have used a tool can tell you how it holds up on bid day. Member reviews come from the people who use the tools (estimators, project managers, superintendents and owners), posted under a handle with any tie to a vendor disclosed. We never write, seed or AI-generate reviews, and a review is never hidden for being negative. The rules are in the review guidelines; recent reviews are on the reviews page.
