Questions to ask before an embodied carbon or LCA software pilot

A checklist for a first conversation with an embodied carbon or LCA vendor. These are our suggestions, drawn from our sustainability and carbon category, compares and roundup. They are not findings: Means & Methods Lab has not tested any tool. Where a question mentions a vendor, it points to something that vendor publishes. Desk research, not tested.

SUGGESTIONS, NOT FINDINGS. No tool has been tested by Means & Methods Lab. Vendor facts are desk research from vendor websites and are not verified. Updated 2026-10-16.

The questions (9)

  1. Q01Does it need a BIM model, or can it start earlier?

WHY IT MATTERS · C.Scale says it runs early assessments from six basic inputs before BIM and also offers Tally 2.0 inside Revit. One Click LCA says Carbon Designer 3D supports early embodied-carbon LCAs without a BIM model, and that it runs LCAs from BIM, Excel or bills of quantities.

WHAT TO ASK · Ask to run the demo from the input you will actually have at that stage: a bill of quantities, a massing model or a Revit model.

  2. Q02Where exactly is the AI, and is it in the plan you would buy?

WHY IT MATTERS · One Click LCA describes AI mapping and AI-powered insights, and lists Generative Design in Carbon Designer 3D and other AI enhancements on its Power Pack tier (quote-only). The C.Scale product pages and EC3 pages we read do not describe AI features, and CarbonCure is a concrete technology, not AI software.

WHAT TO ASK · Ask to see the AI step on its own, and confirm which tier the demo is running on.

  3. Q03How does it match your materials to EPDs or LCA data, and can you check each match?

WHY IT MATTERS · One Click LCA describes AI mapping across synonyms, spelling differences and languages (vendor claim: "ten times better data mapping") and cites 500,000+ LCA datasets. EC3 cites 50,000+ valid EPDs hosted. These are vendor figures we have not verified.

WHAT TO ASK · Bring a bill of quantities with your own material names and ask to see the unmatched and mismatched lines, and how you correct them.

  4. Q04Which standards and reports does it produce for your work?

WHY IT MATTERS · One Click LCA cites BREEAM, LEED, DGNB and 140+ other schemes (vendor claim); its pricing page plan table lists local compliance modules as included and certification report tools as an add-on. C.Scale lists reporting exports including AIA 2030 DDx.

WHAT TO ASK · Name the certification scheme, owner spec section or local rule you must meet, and ask for a sample report in that format.

  5. Q05Would two tools give the same carbon total for the same quantities?

WHY IT MATTERS · Our compares list agreement of carbon totals for the same bill of quantities as an open question. Means & Methods Lab has not tested it.

WHAT TO ASK · Run one small project that already has a completed carbon report through each tool you pilot, and compare the totals and the largest line items.

  6. Q06What is free, and what does the report you need cost?

WHY IT MATTERS · C.Scale says modelling unlimited projects is free and you pay for detailed assessments or compliance reporting. EC3 tool access is described as free and open-access, with a separate API access and pricing page. One Click LCA design packs are quote-only, and a Business License for standard compliance LCAs is sold online. None of the four lists dollar prices on the pages we read.

WHAT TO ASK · Ask what it costs to produce the specific report you would submit, not only to model.

  7. Q07Does it take quantities from the tools your teams already use?

WHY IT MATTERS · One Click LCA lists 20+ BIM and simulation integrations, including Autodesk Construction Cloud, Takeoff and Procore. Building Transparency lists integrations for EC3 including One Click LCA and Procore, plus an EC3 API. C.Scale offers a Whole Life Carbon API.

WHAT TO ASK · Ask to see quantities arrive from your takeoff or model export, not a re-typed sample.

  8. Q08For concrete, is the lower-carbon option a software choice or a supplier choice?

WHY IT MATTERS · CarbonCure is used by ready-mix and precast producers: it injects captured CO2 into fresh concrete, and the vendor says this allows cement reductions while maintaining compressive strength (vendor claim). It is not software a contractor licenses.

WHAT TO ASK · Ask your concrete supplier whether it offers such a mix and for the product EPD to enter into the LCA tool.

  9. Q09Who can see your project data?

WHY IT MATTERS · One Click LCA cites ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certification (vendor claims). This question appears on our other pilot checklists and applies whenever full project quantities are uploaded.

WHAT TO ASK · Ask for data storage, sharing and model-training answers in writing before uploading client quantities.
