Embodied carbon and LCA tools in 2026: where AI shows up (and where it does not)
ROUNDUP · PUBLISHED · UPDATED · SOURCES CHECKED OCT 15, 2026
Embodied carbon is now a bidding and compliance topic for many building projects, and the software next to it ranges from free EPD databases to commercial LCA platforms that advertise AI. We read four vendors' own pages on Oct 15, 2026. Everything below is vendor-described; figures are vendor claims we have not verified, and nothing here is a test result or a recommendation.
Four jobs in one category
This is our framing, not a vendor claim. Embodied-carbon work usually splits into four jobs: screening carbon early (before a full BIM model exists), running a whole-building LCA for design options and certifications, comparing materials with Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), and specifying lower-carbon products such as CO₂-mineralized concrete. The four products below each lead with a different job.
One Click LCA is a commercial LCA and EPD platform that describes embedded AI. C.Scale is an early-to-detailed whole life carbon tool that is free to start. EC3 is Building Transparency's free EPD database and embodied-carbon calculator. CarbonCure is a materials technology for concrete producers, not LCA software.
Where AI is described: One Click LCA
One Click LCA's Powered by AI page says its software uses AI-driven data integration and AI mapping to match materials across synonyms, spelling differences, and multiple languages, and it claims "ten times better data mapping" with those tools (vendor claim, not verified). The same page says AI-powered insights automatically verify results, suggest improvements against industry benchmarks, and compare a design with projected performance metrics to flag modelling errors and decarbonization opportunities.
Its design-and-construction pricing page lists Designer, Expert Pack, and Power Pack (each "Request a quote"). Power Pack is the tier described with "AI enhancements" for scaling LCA adoption firm-wide, and it lists Generative Design in Carbon Designer 3D among its features. The feature grid also lists "AI-assisted automatic data mapping" under Integrations & Automation. A separate Business License is sold online for standard compliance LCAs; no dollar amounts appear on that pricing page.
Carbon Designer 3D is One Click LCA's early-design product for embodied and whole-life carbon without a BIM model: the vendor says you enter basic building parameters and it generates shoebox material quantities and carbon impacts, with localized baselines for 20+ regions, and that early-stage carbon optimisation can cut embodied emissions by up to 50% (vendor claim citing industry research on that page).
Early carbon without claiming product AI: C.Scale
C.Scale sells design-integrated whole life carbon assessment from concept through as-built: build a baseline from six basic inputs before BIM, then add assemblies, product EPDs, portfolio benchmarks, and reporting (including exports to the AIA 2030 DDx). It also offers Tally 2.0 for real-time LCA inside Autodesk Revit and a Whole Life Carbon API. The FAQ says a preliminary assessment takes less than 30 minutes and a more detailed one a few hours, and that C.Scale is free for individuals and firms to model unlimited projects, with payment only when you are ready for detailed assessments or compliance reporting.
Vendor pages cite 300+ design and engineering firms and assessments on 800M+ SF GFA (vendor claims). C.Scale's About page vision statement says life cycle assessment should support "AI-enabled decisions"; the product pages we read do not describe AI features in the product itself, so we do not treat C.Scale as an AI tool.
Free EPD data and materials technology
Building Transparency's EC3 tool is described as free and open-access for finding and comparing materials from digital EPDs, planning a project's embodied carbon, declaring products, and auditing EPDs. The EC3 program page cites 50,000+ valid EPDs hosted and registered users in 84 countries (vendor figures). It notes integrations that include One Click LCA and Procore. No AI features appear on the pages we read. An API Access & Pricing page exists; our Oct 15 fetch of that page was blocked by Cloudflare, so we do not restate any API prices.
CarbonCure is different in kind: it injects captured CO₂ into fresh concrete so the carbon mineralizes in the mix, which the vendor says maintains compressive strength while allowing cement reductions, and it sells carbon credits with producers. It is a materials technology for ready-mix and precast producers, not an LCA or AI application. We include it because specification and procurement teams often ask about it in the same embodied-carbon conversation.
Pricing at a glance
Published as of Oct 15, 2026: C.Scale is free to model unlimited projects, with paid steps for detailed assessments or compliance (no dollar prices on the pages we read). EC3 tool access is described as free and open-access. One Click LCA's Designer, Expert Pack, and Power Pack are quote-only; Business License is buy-online without listed dollar prices on the page we fetched. CarbonCure does not publish software-style seat prices on its homepage.
What to ask before you buy or standardize
These are our suggestions, not findings. Take one recent project with a known bill of quantities and ask each LCA tool what carbon total it returns for the same scope, and which EPDs or generic datasets it used. Ask whether AI mapping or generative design is included in the tier you would buy (for One Click LCA, that means asking whether you need Power Pack). For early-stage tools, ask how the shoebox or six-input baseline compares with a later BIM-based LCA on the same project.
If you only need material comparison for procurement, a free EPD database may be enough; if you need certification reports and firm-wide templates, ask for a compliance-module demo. Embodied carbon is outside Means & Methods Lab's planned benchmark rounds, so we have not tested any of these products.
Takeaways
- Only One Click LCA among these four describes product AI (material mapping, verification insights, Generative Design on Power Pack).
- C.Scale and EC3 lead with free access for early modeling or EPD comparison; One Click LCA's main design packs are quote-only.
- Carbon Designer 3D (One Click LCA) and C.Scale both support early carbon screening before a full BIM model.
- CarbonCure is a concrete technology, not LCA software; it belongs in the specification conversation, not the software shortlist.
- Ask which tier includes any AI features, and compare carbon totals for the same bill of quantities before standardizing.
