| What it does | Estimating and bidding software for civil and infrastructure contractors (vendor: trusted since 1986). Shared templates, crews, and cost data, automated error alerts, what-if analysis, historical data, custom proposals, and export to DOT or digital submission. Available as HeavyBid Desktop (vendor cites integrations to 30+ accounting and DOT systems) and a web-based version. Re-checked Oct 19, 2026: the product page says HeavyBid comes in three levels sized from small contractors bidding about $100,000+ projects to large contractors bidding in the billions; Desktop keeps advanced risk tools and native interfaces to 30+ accounting and DOT systems (Vista, QuickBooks, Sage 300 named); the web-based version is described as browser-based with Flashback estimate history and system-wide libraries, and customers can hold both license types with codebooks carried over. HCSS's AI page (read Oct 19, 2026) says the HCSS AI assistant, included in current subscriptions, connects across HeavyBid, HeavyJob, HCSS Safety and HCSS Plans, and in HeavyBid summarizes estimate audit history so you can see what changed and when. An Estimate Builder agent that drafts an estimate from an imported pay-item list using your estimate history and HCSS libraries is marked Coming Fall 2026 (beta, then a paid upgrade). Because this AI is added to the established product, we now tag HeavyBid AI features added (it was Not AI-first until Oct 19, 2026). Re-checked Oct 20, 2026: the product page still describes HeavyBid Desktop with native interfaces to 30+ back-office systems (Vista, QuickBooks and Sage 300 named) and the web-based version, with Desktop and web licenses usable together; HCSS's AI page still lists HeavyBid estimate audit summaries in the included assistant and the Estimate Builder agent as coming in beta, then a paid upgrade, and now also lists HCSS AI Core as Coming Fall 2026. Re-checked Oct 21, 2026: the HeavyBid page's FAQ says buyers get a dedicated project coordinator for implementation (setup typically 1-3 days), that cities, engineering firms and public utilities also use HeavyBid for capital budget estimates, and that it interfaces with RSMeans and Richardson pricing data (vendor statements); its implementation-time percentage and customer quotes are not used. Re-checked Oct 22, 2026: the HCSS AI page says the AI assistant is included in the subscription and lists HCSS AI Core and HCSS AI Studio as coming fall 2026, with AI Studio described as where agents are configured in plain language; the first pre-built agents it names are a Production Analyst, an Estimate Builder that imports pay items and drafts an estimate from your own history and libraries, and a Field Agent for voice daily logs, with an agents beta later this year followed by a paid upgrade. The HeavyBid FAQ says web-based licenses can be added alongside Desktop licenses. Re-checked Oct 23, 2026: product page unchanged in substance (HeavyBid Desktop with native interfaces to 30+ back-office systems such as Vista, QuickBooks and Sage 300, and a web-based HeavyBid); the HCSS AI page still describes AI that works across estimating, field, fleet and safety data. Re-checked Oct 24, 2026: product page unchanged in substance (HeavyBid Desktop with native interfaces to 30+ back-office systems such as Vista, QuickBooks and Sage 300, and a web-based HeavyBid); the HCSS AI page still lists the included assistant (smart search, job data analysis, estimate audit summaries, document Q&A, daily digest summaries) and HCSS AI Core and AI Studio as Coming Fall 2026. Customer counts, ENR and bid-volume figures are vendor claims not used here. | Estimating and takeoff software for heavy construction: dirt and material quantities, utility estimates, process modeling and progress measurement. Part of Hexagon. Lists AI-related products including Reveal Transform (AI-powered plan prep that converts PDF plan sheets to takeoff-ready data) and Reveal Clean (AI-assisted point cloud editing). Re-checked Oct 19, 2026: the homepage and products pages still feature Reveal Transform (AI plan prep from PDF sheets) and Reveal Clean (AI-assisted point cloud editing); Underground remains listed for storm, sewer, water and other utility estimates with Gradework. Re-checked Oct 21, 2026: the homepage still leads its news with Reveal Transform (AI-powered plan prep that converts PDF plan sheets into takeoff-ready data) and the products page still lists Underground (storm, sewer, water and other utility estimates, working with Gradework) and Reveal (AI that classifies and removes unnecessary elements from point cloud data), plus the DJI Matrice 4E drone for site mapping in AGTEK workflows. Re-checked Oct 22, 2026: the site menu now lists Reveal Maps (photogrammetry with AI) alongside Reveal Clean and Reveal Transform, and the products page lists Highway (imports DOT survey and design files, partitions the 3D job for traffic-control phasing, interactive mass diagram, borrow, spoil and haul) and Trackwork; SmartTrack and the Matrice 4E drone package are still listed. Re-checked Oct 23, 2026: homepage and products page unchanged in substance (Reveal Transform AI plan prep, Reveal Clean AI-assisted point cloud editing and Underground utility estimating still listed). Re-checked Oct 24, 2026: homepage and products page unchanged in substance (Gradework, Materials, Underground and Highway for takeoff; Reveal Transform AI plan prep, Reveal Clean and Reveal Maps; Trackwork and SmartTrack for production; Matrice 4E drone). |

Where the vendor descriptions differ
- What each does (vendor pages): HCSS says HeavyBid builds estimates from scopes of work with activities and crews, can copy a previous estimate or import pay items, and uses historical data, automated calculations and error alerts, then produces proposals and hands estimates to accounting and project management as budgets. AGTEK says its takeoff tools import PDFs, CAD files and drone imagery to calculate earthwork volumes, material quantities and underground utility work, with Gradework (its flagship earthwork takeoff, estimating and 3D modeling product), Materials, Underground and Highway.
- Where the work happens: HeavyBid prices the job (crews, equipment, materials, subs, markups and the bid). AGTEK measures it (cut and fill, trench volumes, materials, DOT highway phasing and mass-haul analysis) and also builds 3D machine control models and tracks production with Trackwork and SmartTrack. Neither vendor page read describes a direct integration between the two; ask both if you need quantities to flow into the estimate.
- AI (vendor pages, Oct 24, 2026): HCSS lists an included HCSS AI assistant that in HeavyBid summarizes estimate audit history, plus HCSS AI Core and AI Studio marked Coming Fall 2026. AGTEK lists Reveal Transform (AI plan prep that turns PDF plan sheets into takeoff-ready data), Reveal Clean (AI that classifies and removes unneeded point cloud elements) and Reveal Maps (photogrammetry with AI).
- Deployment: HeavyBid comes as HeavyBid Desktop (native interfaces to 30+ back-office systems such as Vista, QuickBooks and Sage 300) and a web-based version. AGTEK lists desktop software, mobile apps, drone workflows (including the DJI Matrice 4E) and training classes.
- Pricing (checked Oct 24, 2026): neither publishes prices. HCSS's pricing page is a custom-quote form; AGTEK offers an Explain pricing options request.
- Not used here: HCSS customer counts, ENR and bid-volume figures and customer quotes, and AGTEK customer stories. Neither tool has been tested by Means & Methods Lab.
