Trimble Siteworks vs Komatsu Smart Construction
Two ways to bring 3D design data to sitework crews and machines. Trimble Siteworks is one GNSS survey kit that also works as machine guidance on loaders and excavators, while Komatsu Smart Construction is a suite of machine control, design prep, drone mapping and job data apps. Vendor pages re-read Oct 18, 2026; desk research, not tested, no winner.
In short: Trimble Siteworks (Construction surveying & machine guidance; no public prices (quote / sales)) vs Komatsu Smart Construction (Machine control, guidance & site data suite; no public prices (quote / sales)). Facts last checked Oct 18, 2026. No winner declared; not tested.

| AI role (our label) | Not AI-first | Not AI-first |
| What it does | Trimble's construction surveying software and positioning system for stakeout, grade checks and as-builts. It pairs software with a GNSS smart antenna and rugged data collector to capture points, work with 3D models, stake out and check grade, road and highway alignments/stations, in-field 3D design, as-builts with photos and feature codes, and office-to-field file transfer. An SE version covers core GNSS surveying, PDF reporting, tilt compensation and vehicle mode. Trimble says quantities requested in B2W Track can be captured in Siteworks and flow back (North America only). The Siteworks Machine Guidance module puts the same system on compact track loaders and excavators (standard or tilt attachments), moving between machines in minutes with machine-specific hardware kits; Trimble says it can "eliminate the need for a surveyor" for in-field work (vendor claim). Re-read Oct 18, 2026: Trimble now lists roads, advanced measurement (offsets, traverses, feature codes, utility locators, Trimble SX12) and machine guidance as Siteworks modules, and SketchUp Pro Civil Contractor for simple 3D site designs. Neither page we read describes AI, so we tag it Not AI-first. | Komatsu's construction technology suite for design data, drone mapping, machine control files, cost tracking and fleet data. It includes Dashboard (combines 3D design data, aerial mapping and machine data to confirm quantities and progress daily), Design (prepares design files for Komatsu intelligent machine control and other GNSS machine control systems), Drone and Edge, Field (cost tracking of labor, machines and materials against the bid), Fleet (mobile app for fleet and load-tracking data to track production), Office, Remote (send files to machines, view what the operator sees), 3D Machine Guidance for Komatsu excavators, 3D Machine Guidance Flex (as-built data from any machine with an in-cab tablet), Intelligent Machine Control (IMC), a base/rover RTK unit, and Whiteboard for assigning equipment across jobs. The page we read describes automation and connected data but does not describe the suite as AI, so we tag it Not AI-first. Re-read Oct 18, 2026: the page also lists Komatsu-certified solution experts for operator training, project support and production studies, and says Smart Construction Design prepares files for other compatible GNSS machine control systems as well as Komatsu's. |
| Who it's for | Sitework and civil contractors' grade checkers, foremen and field surveyors; small earthwork outfits moving into machine guidance. | Earthwork and sitework contractors running Komatsu or mixed machines with GNSS machine control. |
| Pricing (as publicly stated) | Not publicly listed ("where to buy" through Trimble dealers; the Siteworks Machine Guidance page mentions a software subscription). (Checked Oct 16, 2026; unchanged Oct 18, 2026.) | Not publicly listed (Smart Construction Remote offers a 30-day free trial on the page we read; other modules route to sales). Where the vendor descriptions differ
- Starting point (vendor wording): Trimble says the Siteworks Positioning System pairs its field software with a GNSS smart antenna and a rugged data collector for capturing points, working with 3D models and managing multiple jobs in one interface. Komatsu describes Smart Construction as a suite of products, services and digital solutions that combine 3D design data, aerial mapping and machine data, with Komatsu-certified solution experts for support, training and production studies.
- Survey and layout: Siteworks lists stakeout with tilt compensation, grade checks against design, in-field 3D design, road and highway alignments and stations, as-builts with photos, attributes and feature codes, and connection to utility locators or the Trimble SX12 scanning total station; Siteworks SE is a starter edition with core GNSS surveying, PDF reporting and vehicle mode that upgrades without retraining. Komatsu lists a base/rover RTK unit for collecting data, staking features and measuring surfaces against 3D designs, drone mapping with Smart Construction Edge (which also acts as a site correction base station), and Smart Construction Design, a modeling service that prepares design files for Komatsu intelligent machine control and other compatible GNSS machine control systems.
- On the machine: Siteworks Machine Guidance moves the same antenna and data collector onto compact track loaders and excavators with standard or tilt attachments, switching between machines in minutes with machine-specific hardware kits, for trenching, slopes, placing material to design and capturing as-builts or stockpile volumes; Trimble Earthworks is its separate full grade control platform. Komatsu offers 3D Machine Guidance for new and used Komatsu excavators, 3D Machine Guidance Flex, which collects as-built data from any machine with operator guidance on an in-cab tablet, and Intelligent Machine Control on Komatsu machines.
- Office and data: Trimble says designs and measurements travel between office and field through a SIM card in the data collector, and that quantities requested in Civil Operations B2W Track can be captured in Siteworks and flow back (North America only); SketchUp Pro Civil Contractor covers simple 3D site designs. Komatsu lists Dashboard (design versus progress and quantities each day), Field (labor, machine and material cost against the bid), Fleet (load tracking), Remote (send files to machines and see the operator's screen) and Whiteboard (assign equipment across jobs). Neither vendor's pages describe AI, so both stay Not AI-first.
- Pricing: neither publishes prices. Siteworks is sold through Trimble dealers, and the machine guidance page refers to a Siteworks software subscription. Komatsu routes to its distributors and offers a 30-day free trial of Smart Construction Remote. Not used here: Trimble's customer quotes and ROI wording, its claim that Siteworks can remove the need for a surveyor, and Komatsu's drone-versus-walking-survey speed figure.

What we can't tell you yet
Which tool is better for your work. That needs testing on the same package with a verified answer key. Planned measures for this comparison:
- Whether you want one portable kit for both grade checking and guidance on small machines (Siteworks) or a connected suite tied to your Komatsu fleet and job data (Smart Construction)
- How well each works with your mixed fleet, existing machine control and design files
- What either costs through your local dealer or distributor; neither publishes prices
