OneCrew vs HCSS HeavyJob
Two field-to-office platforms for self-performing contractors, covering different parts of the job. Not like-for-like (our reading): OneCrew runs a paving business from lead and proposal through scheduling, field time and invoicing; HeavyJob captures time cards, production and daily reports on civil and infrastructure jobs and feeds job cost back to HeavyBid. Desk research from vendor pages read Oct 20, 2026; not tested, no winner.
In short: OneCrew (Paving contractor operating platform; no public prices (quote / sales)) vs HCSS HeavyJob (Heavy civil field data, daily logs & job costing; no public prices (quote / sales)). Facts last checked Oct 20, 2026. No winner declared; not tested.

| AI role (our label) | Not AI-first | AI features added to established product |
| What it does | All-in-one platform for asphalt and concrete paving businesses, from CRM and estimating to crew scheduling, field time tracking and invoicing. It covers CRM, estimating (configurable automated estimates and proposals with interactive maps), drag-and-drop crew scheduling, mobile field management with time tracking and GPS, invoicing with payments and accounting sync, a customer portal, and real-time job costing. Vendor claims estimating time drops by 75% (vendor claim, not verified). The homepage does not describe AI. Re-checked Oct 19, 2026: still no AI described; the feature menu now adds management automation (approval workflows), a customer portal, change order management and real-time analytics, and the homepage cites $8B+ in projects proposed and 45K projects sold in OneCrew (vendor claims). Re-checked Oct 20, 2026: still no AI described; the feature list (CRM, mapping, estimates and proposals, scheduling and dispatch, job site management, job costing, customer portal, real-time analytics, invoicing and payments, management automation, change order management) and the homepage figures above are unchanged (vendor claims), and the homepage describes white-glove onboarding. | Field data and job-cost software for self-perform civil, infrastructure and utility contractors: time cards, production and dailies. Features listed: digital time cards, quantity/production tracking, job costing and budget forecasting, material tracking, map view, T&M billing, bulk work-order import, pay items, daily field reports (DFR) with customizable templates and inspector/owner sign-off, a daily log for management review of activities, photos and progress, custom construction forms, and payroll/accounting export (Sage, Viewpoint, QuickBooks named). Works offline and syncs later. The page says production data feeds back to HeavyBid for future bids, and that most customers are operational within 90 days. Figures on the page (4,000+ contractors, 128,000 active users, "95% of HeavyJob projects close within budget") are vendor claims. The product page we read Oct 16, 2026 does not describe AI features. Re-checked Oct 19, 2026: HCSS's AI page says the HCSS AI assistant, which HCSS calls the first natural-language AI assistant built for civil construction, is active and included in current subscriptions. In HeavyJob it answers questions about job costs, crew, equipment, budget performance and job variance, can generate charts, searches and navigates the platform, answers questions about uploaded SOPs, contracts and safety documents, and condenses days of HeavyJob daily digest data into a short narrative. HCSS says answers are grounded in your own data with sources, existing permissions apply, your data is not used to train AI models, and a privacy mode deletes questions and responses after each session. HCSS AI Studio and pre-built agents (a production analyst for over-budget cost codes, an estimate builder and a voice-driven field agent that drafts daily reports) are marked Coming Fall 2026, in beta first and then a paid upgrade. Because this AI is added to the established product, we now tag HeavyJob AI features added. Re-checked Oct 20, 2026: the product page feature list, offline capture with later sync, payroll and accounting export and the within-90-days rollout statement are unchanged, and it adds a dedicated implementation specialist per customer; the over-40,000-crews figure recorded Oct 19 no longer appears on the product page, so it is dropped here. HCSS's AI page still says the assistant is included in current subscriptions and that AI Studio and the pre-built agents arrive in beta later this year and then become a paid upgrade; it now also lists HCSS AI Core, a data foundation across the platform, as Coming Fall 2026, and says confidence scores show where the AI is and is not certain, with every output open to review and override. |

Where the vendor descriptions differ
- Who it is for: OneCrew says it only works with asphalt and concrete paving businesses. HCSS describes HeavyJob as construction management software for civil and infrastructure work, used by self-perform contractors.
- Scope: OneCrew lists CRM with automated follow-ups, estimates and proposals with interactive maps, drag-and-drop scheduling and dispatch, job site management, job costing, a customer portal, invoicing and payments, approval workflows and change order management. HeavyJob lists time cards, job costing, budget and forecasting, material tracking tied to productivity, map view, T&M billing, bulk work order import, pay items, daily field reports with inspector or owner sign-off, a daily log and custom forms; estimating sits in HCSS's separate HeavyBid.
- In the field: OneCrew describes mobile work orders, time tracking, GPS directions and real-time data capture for crews. HCSS says HeavyJob crews enter time, quantities and safety forms on the jobsite with or without an internet connection and sync later.
- Back office: OneCrew says its invoicing syncs with accounting software. HeavyJob exports approved time cards to payroll and accounting systems (Sage, Viewpoint and QuickBooks named) and sends production data back to HeavyBid for future bids.
- AI: OneCrew's homepage describes no AI, so it stays Not AI-first. HCSS says its AI assistant, included in current subscriptions, answers HeavyJob questions about job costs, crews, equipment and variance and condenses daily digests; AI Studio and pre-built agents, including a voice-driven field agent that drafts daily reports, come in beta later this year and then as a paid upgrade. HeavyJob stays tagged AI features added.
- Rollout: HCSS says most HeavyJob customers are fully operational within 90 days depending on company size and scope, with a dedicated implementation specialist. OneCrew describes white-glove onboarding.
- Pricing (checked Oct 20, 2026): neither publishes prices. OneCrew's /pricing returns not found and its calls to action are a demo; HCSS routes to Get Pricing and demo requests.
- Not used here: OneCrew's estimating-time, onboarding-time and project-volume figures and customer quotes, and HCSS's budget, user-count and rating figures and customer quotes. Neither tool has been tested by Means & Methods Lab.
