What it doesVisual, collaborative CPM scheduling platform described as AI-native, with quality checks, pull planning and plain-English AI scheduling. Features listed: critical path and float management, DCMA-14 schedule quality checks, resource loading and trade stacking, field schedules connected to the master, a whiteboard for pull planning, and AI that turns plain-English requests into schedules and updates, explores what-if scenarios, flags missing logic and shrinking float, and drafts owner updates and delay narratives. Vendor cites 100+ builders (vendor claim). Re-read Oct 17, 2026: the site also lists iPad schedule updates and side-by-side comparison of schedule versions, and the pricing FAQ says onboarding for teams moving from P6, MS Project or other tools includes schedule import assistance and team training, with optional expert training and services. Re-checked Oct 19, 2026: the menu now lists an AI Scheduling Assistant marked New (named manny and described as AI that thinks like a scheduler), Risk Simulations, a Project Dashboard and filters among its features, a Data Centers / Hyperscalers solution page, a free DCMA quality check, Planera for Universities, case studies including Big D Construction, Balfour Beatty (marked new), Zachry Construction and AMLI Residential, and comparison pages against P6, Microsoft Project, Outbuild and Procore Scheduling. Customer quotes are vendor-published and not used here.Project controls and schedule analytics platform that connects to existing CPM scheduling software to check schedule quality, progress and delays. It runs what the vendor calls Automated Project Controls: schedule quality checks, progress against baselines, delay and compression metrics, and windows analysis (a customer quote says this went from weeks to minutes or hours; customer claim, not verified). Company, executive, and project dashboards plus a web-based Gantt. Procore integration is mentioned in a customer quote. The homepage does not describe the product as AI, so we tag it Not AI-first. Re-read Oct 17, 2026: the pricing FAQ says SmartPM's Analytics Engine can be connected to existing tools through an API without changing scheduling tools, individual projects can be upgraded from Essentials to Controls and projects can sit on different plans, managed services are available as add-ons, and it is cloud-based with no installation. Re-checked Oct 19, 2026: homepage and pricing unchanged in substance; the menu lists Controls, Essentials, Reporting and Integrations, solutions for GCs and CM firms, owners and developers and government, a Certified Consultants program and SmartPM Bootcamp, and the homepage still does not describe the product as AI; the integrations page lists Procore, Autodesk Forma and an Open API.

Where the vendor descriptions differ

  • Role: Planera is where the CPM schedule lives, with critical path and float management, resource loading and trade stacking, field schedules connected to the master, a whiteboard for pull planning and iPad updates; its pricing FAQ says onboarding includes schedule import from P6, MS Project or other tools. SmartPM says it connects to existing CPM scheduling software with no need to change scheduling tools, and analyzes the schedules uploaded to it.
  • Schedule quality: both check schedule quality. Planera lists DCMA-14 checks (its site also offers a free DCMA quality check) and side-by-side version compare. SmartPM Essentials lists automated schedule health checks, instant revision compare, core analytics and exportable change and quality reports.
  • Analysis: Planera lists Monte Carlo risk simulation and what-if scenarios; its pricing FAQ places risk simulation, resource loading and portfolio dashboards in higher tiers. SmartPM Controls lists full project analytics, an interactive Gantt viewer, what-if scenarios and time impact analysis, portfolio insights and milestone and critical path tracking, and its pages describe delay and compression metrics and windows analysis.
  • AI: Planera describes AI that turns plain-English requests into schedules and updates, explores what-if scenarios, flags missing logic and shrinking float and drafts owner updates and delay narratives, and its menu lists an AI scheduling assistant marked New; we label it AI-first. SmartPM's homepage does not describe the product as AI, so we label it Not AI-first. We have not tested either.
  • Systems: SmartPM's integrations page lists Procore, Autodesk Forma and an Open API. The Planera pages we read do not name integrations; its FAQ lists advanced integrations in higher tiers and custom integrations and SSO for enterprise customers.
  • Pricing (checked Oct 19, 2026): Planera publishes no prices; it describes custom pricing from a single project to company-wide use with unlimited users at no extra cost, and its FAQ mentions tiers that the page does not show. SmartPM lists Essentials at $12K a year for up to 50 projects and Controls at $25K a year with 5 Controls slots, both with unlimited users, plus a 60-day risk-free trial. Neither tool has been tested by Means & Methods Lab.
