What it doesKomatsu's construction technology suite for design data, drone mapping, machine control files, cost tracking and fleet data. It includes Dashboard (combines 3D design data, aerial mapping and machine data to confirm quantities and progress daily), Design (a modeling service that prepares design files for Komatsu intelligent machine control and other compatible GNSS machine control systems), Drone and Edge (drone-to-Dashboard workflows and site correction), Field (cost tracking of labor, machines and materials against the bid), Fleet (mobile app for fleet and load-tracking data to track production), Office, Remote (send files to machines, view what the operator sees), 3D Machine Guidance for Komatsu excavators, 3D Machine Guidance Flex (as-built data from any machine with an in-cab tablet), Intelligent Machine Control (IMC), a base/rover RTK unit, and Whiteboard for assigning equipment across jobs. The page also lists Komatsu-certified solution experts for operator training, project support, coaching and production studies. It describes automation and connected data but does not describe the suite as AI, so it is tagged Not AI-first. Survey-speed figures are vendor claims and are not used.Caterpillar's cloud fleet management app for mixed-OEM fleets, covering location, hours, fuel, utilization, machine health and service. It offers location, operating hours, idle time, fuel and utilization dashboards; owned, rented or leased assets; geofences, groups and projects; utilization targets; a health view of fault codes, Cat S·O·S fluid analysis and Cat Inspect inspection reports; service intervals with checklists and parts lists; parts ordering through parts.cat.com and service scheduling with a local Cat dealer; work tool attachment hours; scheduled reports in CSV, XLSX, JSON or XML. Integrations listed are Cat Inspect, Cat S·O·S, Cat SIS2 and SIS2GO service information and the Cat Parts Store. Getting started has four steps: consult your Cat dealer, connect assets (activate the built-in hardware on new Cat equipment, or install Cat Product Link devices or pull API feeds from other OEM and third-party telematics on older and non-Cat machines), choose a per-machine subscription, then change management. The page says it supports ISO (AEMP 2.0) standards and notes data field availability varies by manufacturer. Related offers include VisionLink Productivity, VisionLink Dispatch for Loading, Operator Coaching for Excavators and the Cat PL161 attachment tracker. The page describes no AI features, so it is tagged Not AI-first.

Where the vendor descriptions differ

  • Partly like-for-like: both come from a machine manufacturer and both cover where machines are and what they are doing. Komatsu's page spans the whole earthwork job (design files, drone surveys, machine guidance, progress against the bid); VisionLink's page is about fleet visibility, maintenance and utilization.
  • Fleet data: Komatsu lists Fleet, a mobile app for fleet and load-tracking data to track production, and Remote, which shows fleet location, sends files to machines and shows what operators see. VisionLink lists location, operating hours, idle time, fuel and utilization dashboards for owned, rented or leased assets, with geofences, groups, projects and utilization targets.
  • Mixed fleets: VisionLink says it manages mixed-OEM fleets through Cat Product Link devices or API feeds from other OEM and third-party telematics (ISO AEMP 2.0), and notes data fields vary by manufacturer. Komatsu says 3D Machine Guidance Flex collects as-built data from any machine with an in-cab tablet.
  • Maintenance and site work: VisionLink adds a health view (fault codes, Cat S·O·S fluid analysis, Cat Inspect reports), service intervals with checklists and parts lists, parts ordering through parts.cat.com and service scheduling with a Cat dealer. Komatsu adds Design (machine control file prep), Drone and Edge, Dashboard (3D design, aerial mapping and machine data to confirm quantities), Field cost tracking against the bid, 3D Machine Guidance and Intelligent Machine Control.
  • AI: neither page read describes AI features; both describe connected data and automation.
  • Pricing: neither publishes prices. Komatsu offers a 30-day free trial of Smart Construction Remote and routes other solutions to a distributor. VisionLink is a per-machine subscription chosen with a Cat dealer.
  • Not used here: Komatsu's survey-speed figures (vendor claims). Facts for both come from vendor websites (desk research).

Questions to ask in your review

  • How much of the Komatsu suite works with a mostly non-Komatsu fleet, and which VisionLink data fields your older or non-Cat machines report
  • Per-machine or per-module prices from your dealer or distributor
  • What did you use it for, on what kind of work and project size?
  • How long did setup and training take, and who on your team did it?
  • What does it cost you in practice, compared with what the sales call said?
  • Where does it fall short, and what would make you switch?
