Komatsu Smart Construction vs Propeller
Two earthwork site-data suites that both combine drone surveys, design surfaces and machine data into a daily picture of progress. Komatsu Smart Construction is an equipment maker's suite that runs from design files and drone mapping through machine guidance, intelligent machine control, field cost tracking and equipment scheduling. Propeller is a hardware-agnostic, map-based platform built around survey data, with its own DirtMate GNSS receivers for telematics and grade checks and a newer AI design tool, Propeller CAD. Partly like-for-like (our reading): they overlap on drone mapping, volumes and progress, but Komatsu goes further into machine control and Propeller further into survey processing. Desk research from vendor sites read Oct 31, 2026; no winner.
In short: Komatsu Smart Construction (Machine control, guidance & site data suite; no public prices (quote / sales)) vs Propeller (Drone survey & earthwork measurement; no public prices (quote / sales)). Facts last checked Komatsu Smart Construction Nov 2, 2026; Propeller Nov 1, 2026. No winner declared; desk research from vendor sites.

| What it does | Komatsu's construction technology suite for design data, drone mapping, machine control files, cost tracking and fleet data. It includes Dashboard (combines 3D design data, aerial mapping and machine data to confirm quantities and progress daily), Design (a modeling service that prepares design files for Komatsu intelligent machine control and other compatible GNSS machine control systems), Drone and Edge (drone-to-Dashboard workflows and site correction), Field (cost tracking of labor, machines and materials against the bid), Fleet (mobile app for fleet and load-tracking data to track production), Office, Remote (send files to machines, view what the operator sees), 3D Machine Guidance for Komatsu excavators, 3D Machine Guidance Flex (as-built data from any machine with an in-cab tablet), Intelligent Machine Control (IMC), a base/rover RTK unit, and Whiteboard for assigning equipment across jobs. The page also lists Komatsu-certified solution experts for operator training, project support, coaching and production studies. It describes automation and connected data but does not describe the suite as AI, so it is tagged Not AI-first. Survey-speed figures are vendor claims and are not used. | Cloud, map-based site platform that combines drone, GNSS rover, total station and scanner data to measure volumes, distances, heights, grades and daily production, overlay CAD designs and organize site documents. Products: Propeller (core hub), survey processing (photogrammetry and lidar), Propeller PPK, handheld scanning and RTK, DirtMate GNSS receivers (machine telematics, base station, rover or position monitor on equipment from any manufacturer, with in-cab guidance for rough grading flat surfaces, load/dump counts, run/idle time and new surfaces every 30 minutes where machines are working) and AeroPoints (smart ground control points). Propeller CAD, which the vendor calls AI-powered earthworks design, generates haul roads and ramps, balanced pads, ponds and trenches from plain-language prompts on the site's real drone survey surface, can take attached standards and specs as context, and exports DXF and TTM for the engineering team's final deliverables; it is pitched for early-stage concepting. Because the core map-and-measure platform predates this, we tag Propeller as AI features added to an established product. The hardware integrations page says it works with data from any drone and lists tested models with expected accuracy (e.g. Skydio X10 at 3-7 cm with at least 3 AeroPoints). Software integrations include Trimble Connect, Procore, Autodesk BIM 360/Build, Aconex, OneDrive and HCSS; a data centers industry page is listed. Customer quotes, design-time and efficiency figures are vendor material not used here. |
| Who it's for | Earthwork and sitework contractors running Komatsu or mixed machines with GNSS machine control. | Earthmoving, civil, mining, aggregates, and waste-management site teams. |
| Pricing (as publicly stated) | Not publicly listed. Smart Construction Remote offers a 30-day free trial on the page read; other solutions route to sales through a distributor. Confirm pricing with Komatsu or a distributor. | No public prices. The vendor site has no pricing or plans link and /pricing and /plans return not found. Where the vendor descriptions differ
- Site picture: Komatsu's Dashboard combines 3D design data, aerial mapping and machine data to confirm quantities and see progress each day, with Edge moving drone data into Dashboard and acting as a site correction base station. Propeller describes a single cloud map that takes surface data from drones, GNSS rovers, total stations or scanners, measures volumes and grades, overlays designs and holds site documents (vendor statements).
- Machines: Komatsu lists 3D Machine Guidance for its excavators, 3D Machine Guidance Flex for as-built data and in-cab guidance from any machine, Intelligent Machine Control, Remote for sending files to machines and seeing the operator's view, and Fleet for load tracking. Propeller's DirtMate receivers mount on equipment from any manufacturer for location, elevation, load/dump counts and run/idle time, give operators in-cab design visibility for rough grading, and can generate surfaces every 30 minutes where machines are working (vendor statements).
- Design and cost: Komatsu's Smart Construction Design is a modeling service that prepares design files for Komatsu and other compatible GNSS machine control systems, and Field tracks labor, machine and material cost against the bid. Propeller CAD generates concept earthwork designs such as haul roads, pads, ponds and trenches from plain-language prompts on the survey surface, with DXF and TTM export; Propeller's pages we read do not describe cost tracking against a bid (vendor statements).
- Support and integrations: Komatsu offers certified solution experts for operator training, project support and production studies through its distributors. Propeller lists integrations with Trimble Connect, Procore, Autodesk BIM 360 and Build, Aconex, OneDrive and HCSS (vendor statements).
- AI (our reading): Komatsu's page describes automation and connected data but not AI, so we tag it Not AI-first. Propeller calls Propeller CAD AI-powered, and we tag it AI features added to an established product.
- Pricing (checked Oct 31, 2026): neither publishes prices. Komatsu offers a 30-day free trial of Smart Construction Remote and routes the rest to a distributor; Propeller offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card, and /pricing returns a not-found page.
- Not used here: Komatsu's drone-versus-walking-survey speed figure, and Propeller's customer quotes and efficiency results (vendor claims). Facts for both tools come from vendor websites (desk research).

Questions to ask in your review
- How much of Komatsu's suite works well on a mixed fleet with no Komatsu machines
- Whether Propeller surfaces and DirtMate data can feed Komatsu Dashboard, or the reverse; neither page says so
- What a typical site subscription or hardware package costs for either; both are quote-only
- What did you use it for, on what kind of work and project size?
- How long did setup and training take, and who on your team did it?
- What does it cost you in practice, compared with what the sales call said?
