AI in heavy civil estimating: where it shows up today

Heavy civil estimating runs on bid-item schedules, production rates, crews, equipment, and earthwork quantities, usually inside systems like HCSS HeavyBid or B2W Estimate, which do not market themselves as AI-first. AI is showing up around the edges: preparing plans, measuring earthwork from PDFs, outsourced takeoff, and scheduling. This guide maps that from vendor pages. It is not a test and not a recommendation.

The questions (7)

  1. Q01Plan prep: turning PDF plan sheets into usable data

WHY IT MATTERS · AGTEK lists Reveal Transform, AI-powered plan prep that converts PDF plan sheets to takeoff-ready data. Trimble Business Center release notes mention a beta AI assistant.

WHAT TO CHECK · Ask whether the feature is released or beta, and run it on a real plan-and-profile sheet, not a clean demo set.

  2. Q02Cut and fill from PDF grading plans

WHY IT MATTERS · SitesAI Estimate and Foreman AI both compute cut/fill from traced PDF contours or levels. Both say you apply your own shrink/swell; Foreman AI notes accuracy follows the plan's contour interval.

WHAT TO CHECK · Compare against the engineer's earthwork numbers or your own surface-to-surface takeoff on the same site.

  3. Q03AI takeoff services for civil scopes

WHY IT MATTERS · Civils.ai describes prompt-driven takeoffs for groundworks, drainage, and utilities with human QA review; Beam AI lists utility/civil, paving, and earthwork among its trades.

WHAT TO CHECK · Ask for turnaround, how QA is done, and whether outputs map to DOT pay items and units.

  4. Q04Measuring what is on the ground

WHY IT MATTERS · Propeller combines drone, GNSS, and survey data to measure volumes and daily production; it does not market this as AI. This matters for progress quantities and change-order evidence more than for bid day.

WHAT TO CHECK · Ask how accuracy depends on ground control and capture method.

  5. Q05Schedules on infrastructure bids

WHY IT MATTERS · nPlan lists highways, rail, and heavy infrastructure among its sectors; ALICE lists railways, highways, bridges, and tunnels. Both are AI-first scheduling tools.

WHAT TO CHECK · Useful if your bid needs a credible schedule or a risk view; ask what input file it needs at bid stage.

  6. Q06What still sits in your estimating system

WHY IT MATTERS · Crews, production rates, equipment costs, and DOT/e-bid exports are what HeavyBid and B2W describe. None of the AI tools above replaces that pricing logic on its own pages.

WHAT TO CHECK · For any AI tool, ask exactly how its quantities get into your HeavyBid/B2W items and units.

  7. Q07Accuracy claims

WHY IT MATTERS · Civils.ai claims 97%+ on takeoffs and Beam AI claims 99%+. These are vendor claims; we have not verified them.

WHAT TO CHECK · Ask on what drawings, measured how, against what answer key.
