Raken vs HCSS HeavyJob
Two field apps that capture the day's work, built for different depths of job costing. Raken is a broad daily reporting and field management app with published per-user prices, collaborator reports for subs, time tracking and AI daily report summaries. HCSS HeavyJob is heavy civil field software built around time cards for crew hours, equipment hours and quantities, feeding instant job costing and production data back to HeavyBid, with an included HCSS AI assistant. Desk research from vendor pages read Oct 27, 2026; not tested, no winner.

| What it does | Field-first web and mobile app for daily progress reports, time and production tracking, materials and equipment, safety, RFIs, forms and documents. Daily reports collect notes, photos, and videos that sync in real time and generate a shareable PDF daily report; the app also covers material and equipment tracking, safety and quality checklists, observations, toolbox talks, incidents with OSHA submit, RFIs, digital forms, and document storage. The homepage and pricing pages we re-checked Oct 16 and Oct 19, 2026 still do not describe AI features, so we keep the Not AI-first tag. The Oct 19 navigation also lists resource scheduling, certifications and labor map, project management and RFIs. Re-checked Oct 21, 2026: the homepage and pricing page still do not describe AI features (Not AI-first tag kept); the plan comparison still lists resource scheduling, time tracking with geofencing, kiosk mode, certifications and labor map, incidents with OSHA submit, RFIs, digital forms and document storage. App-store rating figures on the homepage are not used here. Re-checked Oct 22, 2026 (homepage and rendered pricing page): still no AI features described (Not AI-first tag kept); the navigation now lists submittals under project management and a Who We Serve menu that includes heavy civil. Re-read Oct 23, 2026 for a compare: homepage and rendered pricing page still do not describe AI features (Not AI-first tag kept); daily reports still collect notes, photos and videos into a shareable PDF report, and the navigation still lists submittals (marked new) and heavy civil. Re-checked Oct 24, 2026: homepage and navigation unchanged (daily reports, time, production, safety and quality, RFIs, submittals marked New, heavy civil listed); still no AI described, so Not AI-first stays. Re-checked Oct 25, 2026: homepage and navigation unchanged (daily reports, time, production, safety and quality, submittals marked New, heavy civil listed); still no AI described, so Not AI-first stays. Re-checked Oct 26, 2026: homepage unchanged in substance (field management web and mobile app: daily progress reporting with shareable PDF daily reports, time and production tracking, safety and quality checklists, observations and toolbox talks, document management; the platform menu still marks Project Management and Submittals as new); still no AI described, so the tag stays. App-store ratings and customer quotes are vendor content and not used. Re-checked Oct 27, 2026, including the Daily Reports and Time Tracking feature pages for the first time: the Daily Reports page lists AI Daily Report Summaries (automatically generated summaries that highlight key project insights and identify issues), collaborator reports that give subcontractors free access to file their own dailies, segmented daily reports by supervisor, shift or location, and branded PDF reports with the day's weather; the Time Tracking page lists time cards, a mobile time clock and kiosk mode, geofencing and GPS, custom payroll policies and unlimited cost codes, and AI photo ID for flagging attempted time fraud. Retagged from Not AI-first to AI features added to an established product on Oct 27, 2026 on the strength of those two features; the homepage itself still does not lead with AI. | Field data and job-cost software for self-perform civil, infrastructure and utility contractors: time cards, production and dailies. Features listed: digital time cards, quantity/production tracking, job costing and budget forecasting, material tracking, map view, T&M billing, bulk work-order import, pay items, daily field reports (DFR) with customizable templates and inspector/owner sign-off, a daily log for management review of activities, photos and progress, custom construction forms, and payroll/accounting export (Sage, Viewpoint, QuickBooks named). Works offline and syncs later. The page says production data feeds back to HeavyBid for future bids, and that most customers are operational within 90 days. Figures on the page (4,000+ contractors, 128,000 active users, "95% of HeavyJob projects close within budget") are vendor claims. The product page we read Oct 16, 2026 does not describe AI features. Re-checked Oct 19, 2026: HCSS's AI page says the HCSS AI assistant, which HCSS calls the first natural-language AI assistant built for civil construction, is active and included in current subscriptions. In HeavyJob it answers questions about job costs, crew, equipment, budget performance and job variance, can generate charts, searches and navigates the platform, answers questions about uploaded SOPs, contracts and safety documents, and condenses days of HeavyJob daily digest data into a short narrative. HCSS says answers are grounded in your own data with sources, existing permissions apply, your data is not used to train AI models, and a privacy mode deletes questions and responses after each session. HCSS AI Studio and pre-built agents (a production analyst for over-budget cost codes, an estimate builder and a voice-driven field agent that drafts daily reports) are marked Coming Fall 2026, in beta first and then a paid upgrade. Because this AI is added to the established product, we now tag HeavyJob AI features added. Re-checked Oct 20, 2026: the product page feature list, offline capture with later sync, payroll and accounting export and the within-90-days rollout statement are unchanged, and it adds a dedicated implementation specialist per customer; the over-40,000-crews figure recorded Oct 19 no longer appears on the product page, so it is dropped here. HCSS's AI page still says the assistant is included in current subscriptions and that AI Studio and the pre-built agents arrive in beta later this year and then become a paid upgrade; it now also lists HCSS AI Core, a data foundation across the platform, as Coming Fall 2026, and says confidence scores show where the AI is and is not certain, with every output open to review and override. Re-checked Oct 22, 2026: the product page is unchanged in substance (time cards, production, job costing, DFR, daily log, forms, pay items, offline capture with later sync, Sage, Viewpoint and QuickBooks export, a dedicated implementation specialist, most customers operational within 90 days). HCSS's AI page is unchanged in substance: the assistant is included in current subscriptions; AI Core, AI Studio and the production analyst, estimate builder and field agents are Coming Fall 2026, in beta first and then a paid upgrade; it adds that nothing the agents prepare finalizes without the user's approval, and repeats that data is never used to train AI models and that HeavyJob permissions apply. The contractor count and support quotes are vendor material and not used. Re-checked Oct 24, 2026: the product page is unchanged in substance (Sage, Viewpoint and QuickBooks export, a dedicated implementation specialist, most customers fully operational within 90 days). HCSS's AI page is unchanged in substance: the assistant is active and included in current subscriptions; AI Core and AI Studio are Coming Fall 2026, with the production analyst, estimate builder and field agents in beta later this year and then a paid upgrade; nothing finalizes without the user's approval and confidence scores flag uncertainty; data is isolated to each company and not used to train AI models, and a privacy mode deletes questions and responses after each session (vendor statements). Re-checked Oct 26, 2026: the product page is unchanged in substance (time cards for crew hours, equipment hours and quantities, job costing and forecasting, T&M, work-order import, pay items, customizable daily reports with inspector or owner sign-off, payroll and accounting export naming Sage, Viewpoint and QuickBooks, a dedicated implementation specialist, most customers fully operational within 90 days). HCSS's AI page is unchanged in substance (assistant included in current subscriptions; AI Core and AI Studio Coming Fall 2026; production analyst, estimate builder and voice-driven field agent in beta later this year, then a paid upgrade). |

Where the vendor descriptions differ
- Daily reports: Raken's Daily Reports page describes notes, photos and video building a PDF report with your logo and the day's weather, collaborator reports that let subs file their own dailies free, and segmented reports by supervisor, shift or location. HeavyJob lists daily field reporting (DFR) and a daily log alongside its time cards.
- Time and cost: Raken's Time Tracking page lists time cards, a time clock and kiosk mode, geofencing and identity verification, custom payroll policies and unlimited cost codes, with production tracking on Performance. HeavyJob captures crew hours, equipment hours and quantities on the time card for instant job costing, budget and forecasting, material tracking, map view, T&M billing and pay items, exports to Sage, Viewpoint, QuickBooks and others, and sends production data back to HeavyBid.
- AI: both are tagged AI features added to an established product. Raken lists AI Daily Report Summaries and AI photo ID for flagging attempted time fraud. HCSS says its AI assistant is included in current subscriptions, and lists AI Studio and prebuilt agents (a Production Analyst and a voice Field Agent that fills in time cards and diaries) as Coming Fall 2026, beta first and then a paid upgrade; it says company data is never used to train AI models and offers a privacy mode.
- Pricing (checked Oct 27, 2026): Raken lists Basic at $23 and Performance at $59 per user per month, billed annually with a 3-user minimum. HCSS publishes no HeavyJob prices and offers a pricing request and demo; it says most HeavyJob customers are fully operational within 90 days depending on company size and rollout. See each tool page for detail.
- Not like-for-like: Raken is a general field reporting app that lists heavy civil among the contractors it serves; HeavyJob is heavy civil job-cost field software tied to the HCSS estimating suite.
- Not used here: HCSS's customer and crew counts and budget claims, app-store ratings, and both vendors' customer quotes (vendor material). Neither tool has been tested by Means & Methods Lab.
