AI for equipment managers in 2026: telematics, maintenance, load counts, dash cams and machine control

ROUNDUP · PUBLISHED · UPDATED · SOURCES CHECKED OCT 16, 2026

For heavy civil and sitework contractors, the software around equipment now spans trackers, dash cams, inspections, parts and machine control. We re-read nine vendors' pages on Oct 16, 2026 and sorted them by the job an equipment manager does, then asked a narrower question: where is the AI, and where is it just telematics? Desk research, not tested. Vendor statements are labeled as claims; nothing here is a recommendation.

DESK RESEARCH, NOT TESTED. Figures come from the sources listed below. Vendor and company statements are claims and are not verified by Means & Methods Lab.

Who this is for, and how it differs from our autonomy roundup

This roundup is written for equipment managers, shop and parts staff, heavy civil and sitework contractors, and rental fleets. Our earlier piece, AI in construction equipment and fleets: autonomy, haulage, and telematics, covers robots and autonomous haul trucks (Built Robotics, Bedrock Robotics, Pronto). This one stays with the yard and the spread: utilization, maintenance and inspections, production counts, dash cams, tool parks, machine control, and parts.

Desk research from vendor pages re-read on Oct 16, 2026, not tested. Vendor statements are labeled as claims. We did not find a vendor page that cited the AEMP / ISO 15143-3 mixed-fleet telematics standard on this pass, so we do not discuss it here.

AI vs plain telematics

This is our framing, not a vendor claim: GPS location, engine hours, geofences, after-hours alerts and fault codes are telematics. They are useful, and they are not AI. AI is a model or assistant that turns that data into something new: a recognized load, a flagged dent, a recommended reallocation, an answer in plain language.

By that test, the pages we read sort into two groups. Vendor-described AI: Tenna (machine-learning load counts, AI dash cams), Trackunit (IrisX assistant and MCP), Samsara (Assistant, Agent Studio, MCP), Tenderd (markets itself as AI-powered; our Oct 14 listing recorded AI incident detection and AI-driven equipment allocation), Record360 (360AI damage flags) and Gearflow ("A.I. Assisted" procurement, features not detailed). No AI described: EquipmentShare T3, Hilti ON!Track and Komatsu Smart Construction, which sell tracking, access control, machine control and connected data. That is a labeling question, not a quality ranking.

Telematics, utilization and mixed fleets

Tenna puts equipment, vehicles, tools, attachments and materials in one system, sells its own trackers and integrates OEM telematics and ERP. Trackunit lists telematics hardware, Spot for non-powered assets, Pass for access, a Bluetooth tool network and plans for OEMs, rental companies and contractors. Tenderd's FAQ lists mixed-fleet telematics, utilization analytics, fuel and emissions monitoring, and its homepage cites deployments with AD Ports (30% higher utilization) and McDermott (27% less downtime) (vendor claims, not verified).

EquipmentShare T3 lists asset trackers, Bluetooth tags for buckets and attachments, after-hours movement alerts and a cloud-connected interlocking keypad that restricts machines to authorized operators and logs operator history. EquipmentShare says T3 also runs its own rental fleet. Hilti ON!Track starts from the tool park — tools, consumables, PPE and safety certifications — and adds a heavy-equipment GPS gateway that reads Hilti tags on site and a vehicle gateway for remote inventory checks; Hilti says it is manufacturer-independent.

Trackunit and Samsara both publish an MCP connection to general AI assistants (covered in our autonomy roundup). Ask which permissions govern what those assistants can see and change.

Maintenance, inspections and parts

Tenna, Tenderd, Trackunit and Samsara all list preventive maintenance or fault-code alerts. Tenna sells Maintenance as a premium add-on to its core platform. Tenderd lists predictive maintenance alongside preventive planning.

Record360 covers the handoff moment: guided check-out and return inspections with required photos and e-signatures, condition history with side-by-side comparison, and rule-based tasks that turn a failed item into a work order. Its 360AI is described as using visual heatmaps to flag possible glass, tire and body damage as photos are taken, with the vendor stressing "AI-assisted. Human-approved." It says records flow into the rental management system (vendor description).

Gearflow sits after the diagnosis: a field request for a repair or part goes to the superintendent, then fleet operations sources parts, service, rental and freight from its own vendors and Gearflow's network and compares quotes. It claims 12+ hours saved per person per week and 10%+ lower rental and repair costs (vendor claims, not verified).

Haul cycles, load counts and production tracking

Tenna's Load Tracking (announced Oct 6, 2026) says machine-learning models on 1 Hz telematics recognize loading, queuing and dumping and count haul cycles and quantities by job without added hardware (vendor claim). Komatsu Smart Construction lists a Fleet mobile app for fleet and load-tracking data, a Field module for tracking labor, machine and material cost against the bid, and a Dashboard that combines 3D design data, aerial mapping and machine data to confirm quantities and see progress daily.

Versatile does the equivalent for cranes: it captures data passively from the crane to show picks, sequence, pace and delays; Turner Construction is quoted on smoothing crane-utilization peaks (vendor-published quote). For estimators, production counts are the bridge back to unit rates — see our heavy civil estimating and site data roundup.

Dash cams and driver safety

Samsara lists dual-facing and front-facing AI dash cams with real-time alerts and coaching. Tenna sells AI dash cams with collision warnings, incident capture and driver scorecards. EquipmentShare T3 lists a dual-view dash cam with in-cab visual and audio alerts for follow distance, forward collision and distracted driving, plus speed and incident tracking for DOT and OSHA needs; its page does not call these alerts AI. Tenderd's FAQ lists safety insights and driver behavior monitoring.

Our jobsite safety roundup covers camera AI on the site itself; dash cams are the on-road and haul-road side of the same question: who reviews the clip, and what happens next.

Machine control and autonomy

Komatsu lists 3D Machine Guidance for its excavators, 3D Machine Guidance Flex to collect as-built data from any machine with an in-cab tablet, Intelligent Machine Control, a design-file preparation service for IMC and other GNSS machine control systems, a base/rover RTK unit, and Remote, which sends files to machines and shows what the operator sees. Remote has a 30-day free trial on the page we read.

Full autonomy is a different purchase. Built Robotics (solar piling and trenching), Bedrock Robotics (excavation) and Pronto (haul trucks) are covered in our autonomy roundup.

Pricing snapshot (Oct 16, 2026)

None of the nine vendors in this roundup publishes dollar prices on the pages we read. Tenna prices data and hardware by asset count; Trackunit quotes OEM, rental and contractor plans; Komatsu offers a free Remote trial; Hilti starts with a productivity analysis; EquipmentShare, Samsara, Tenderd, Record360 and Gearflow route to sales (Gearflow's /pricing returned 404).

What to ask before a pilot

These are our suggestions, not findings. Start with your asset list by make, model and data source, and one week of haul tickets you want counted. Ask what the AI does that your telematics does not, who acts on each alert, and whether the tool replaces or feeds your maintenance and parts systems. Our equipment and fleet AI pilot checklist goes into more detail.
