AutoSpecs vs RIB SpecLink
Two tools on opposite sides of the project manual: a specification-writing platform for design teams with an AI add-on, and an Autodesk tool that reads a finished spec book into a draft submittal log for the builder. Desk research from vendor pages read Oct 25, 2026; not tested, no winner.
In short: AutoSpecs (Autodesk / Pype) (AI spec review & submittal logs; no public prices (quote / sales)) vs RIB SpecLink (Specification writing (CSI-standard content); no public prices (quote / sales)). Facts last checked Oct 24, 2026. No winner declared; not tested.

| Sheet row | AutoSpecs (Autodesk / Pype) | RIB SpecLink |
|---|---|---|
| Category | AI spec review & submittal logs | Specification writing (CSI-standard content) |
| AI role (our label) | AI-first | AI features added to established product |
| What it does | Reads spec books to generate a draft submittal log in minutes, with version compare and suggested missing items. Log items cover action submittals, product data, closeout, QA/QC, tests and inspections. Version compare highlights changed submittal requirements between spec versions. Suggested Submittals (powered by Construction IQ) compares the spec against historical project data to flag potentially missing items; vendor says the algorithm was trained on thousands of projects (vendor claim). Publishes logs to Forma Build. Offered as AutoSpecs in Autodesk Forma and as Pype AutoSpecs; Autodesk says both are included in the Forma for Construction Operations bundle. Re-read Oct 16, 2026: the AutoSpecs page and FAQ are unchanged (AI reads specs for action, product data, closeout, QA/QC and test/inspection submittals; machine-learning Suggested Submittals; side-by-side spec version compare). Re-checked Oct 19, 2026: the AutoSpecs page (now under Autodesk Forma branding; it notes Autodesk Construction Cloud is now part of Autodesk Forma) still describes AI-generated draft submittal logs, version compare, Construction IQ Suggested Submittals and publishing to Forma Build, and adds saving submittal information to Forma Data Management. Re-checked Oct 21, 2026: the AutoSpecs page is unchanged in substance (AI identifies action submittals, product data, closeout and QA/QC submittals; versioning compares spec versions side by side); the Pype overview page still offers AutoSpecs, Closeout, eBinder and SmartPlans sign-ins. Re-checked Oct 22, 2026: the AutoSpecs page is unchanged in substance (AI-drafted submittal logs, side-by-side spec version compare, Construction IQ Suggested Submittals, publishing to Forma Build and saving to Forma Data Management). The Pype overview page returned an access error (403) to our reader today. Re-checked Oct 23, 2026: AutoSpecs page unchanged in substance (AI-drafted submittal logs from specs, version compare, Construction IQ suggested submittals, publish to Forma Build and save to Forma Data Management). The Pype overview page still returns an access-denied error to our reader. Re-checked Oct 24, 2026: AutoSpecs page unchanged in substance (AI-drafted submittal logs from specs, side-by-side spec version compare, Construction IQ Suggested Submittals, publish to Forma Build and save to Forma Data Management). The Pype overview page still returns an access-denied error to our reader. | Cloud-based CSI specification software from RIB (formerly BSD SpecLink) with editing by inclusion and auto-linked requirements. The old bsdspeclink.com address now redirects to RIB; the software is built on CSI-standard master content in MasterFormat 2004-2016 and the CSI 3-part SectionFormat, with a single project database, editing by inclusion (select text from a checklist instead of deleting), and intelligent links that automatically include related requirements and exclude contradictory options. Lists Revit synchronization, LEED v4 provisions, 30 built-in reports including lists of required submittals and manufacturers, quarterly content updates, and citations to 3,000+ reference standards audited annually (vendor claims). RIB says customers own the content they create. AI: a separate SpecLink.AI page describes an AI tool for project-data Q&A, quality control with consistent, repeatable specification reviews, and a knowledge hub, built on Azure OpenAI with stated data-privacy terms (prompts and outputs not used to train OpenAI models). That page still says SpecLink.AI is rolling out in a private/closed beta "at the end of 2024 and into 2025" via a waitlist, first as a co-pilot inside SpecLink Cloud and later as a standalone app; we could not confirm general availability. "70% faster" spec editing and "25,000+ construction professionals" are vendor claims. Re-checked Oct 19, 2026: the SpecLink page still describes inclusion editing, smart linking, direct Revit sync with a web-based viewer, and a content database of 910+ sections with 3,000+ reference standards, and says SpecLink is the Construction Specifications Institute's only construction software partner (10+ year relationship, vendor statement); the SpecLink.AI FAQ still describes a private/closed beta at the end of 2024 and into 2025 with a waitlist, so general availability is still unconfirmed. Re-checked Oct 20, 2026: the SpecLink page is unchanged in substance (inclusion editing, smart linking, direct Revit sync with a web viewer, 910+ content sections, 3,000+ reference standards, CSI's only construction software partner); the old SpecLink.AI address (/rib-speclink/ai) now returns an empty page, and the SpecLink.AI content sits under SpecLink Omni (/rib-speclink/omni), whose FAQ still says it is rolling out in a private/closed beta at the end of 2024 and into 2025 with a waitlist, first as a co-pilot in SpecLink Cloud and later standalone, so general availability is still unconfirmed. Re-checked Oct 21, 2026: the SpecLink page now presents its AI layer as SpecLink + Omni, which RIB says reasons over your specs, catches cross-division conflicts and keeps every answer traceable (version stamps, source clauses and reasoning steps), with nothing changed without your review, section by section; the Omni page (also served at /rib-speclink/ai) no longer mentions the private beta and waitlist and its FAQ calls Omni an add-on to a current SpecLink plan, but no launch date is stated, so general availability is still unconfirmed. It restates the Azure OpenAI data terms. The core page still describes inclusion editing, smart linking, direct Revit sync with an interactive web viewer and CSI's partnership; the pricing page now cites more than 1,100 master sections updated quarterly, against 910+ on the product pages read Oct 19 and 20 (flagged). Re-checked Oct 22, 2026: unchanged in substance (SpecLink + Omni FAQ still says it is an add-on to a SpecLink plan, free for the first 90 days after launch, with tiered pricing from January 2027, and no launch date). The site footer again shows a Join the SpecLink.AI Waitlist link, so general availability is still unconfirmed. Flag: the SpecLink page now shows both 910+ content sections and more than 1,100; we use neither as a fixed count. Re-checked Oct 23, 2026: the Omni page is unchanged in substance (reasoning over your specs, cross-division conflict checks, version stamps, source clauses and reasoning steps, nothing changed without your review; Azure OpenAI data terms). On the SpecLink page we read, the 910+ sections figure and the waitlist link no longer appeared; the page and the pricing page cite more than 1,100 sections. No launch date for Omni is stated, so general availability is still unconfirmed. Re-checked Oct 24, 2026: the Omni page is unchanged (nothing changes without your review; version stamps, source clauses and reasoning steps; Azure OpenAI data terms). The SpecLink page we read now shows both the 910+ content sections figure and the more-than-1,100 figure again; no waitlist link found. No Omni launch date is stated, so general availability is still unconfirmed. |
| Who it's for | General contractors' project and preconstruction teams setting up submittals at project start. | Specification writers and consultants, architects and engineers; RIB says SpecLink.AI is meant for GCs, specialty subs, owners and PMs too. |
| Pricing (as publicly stated) | Not publicly listed (Autodesk says Pype AutoSpecs is licensed only through the Forma for Construction Operations bundle; re-confirmed Oct 19, 2026 on the Pype overview page, which says Pype AutoSpecs and Pype Closeout are only licensed through the Forma for Construction Operations bundle and that Pype eBinder and SmartPlans have not been sold since March 26, 2024; the AutoSpecs page on Oct 19 offers only Get a demo). Re-checked Oct 21, 2026: unchanged; the Pype overview says Pype AutoSpecs and Pype Closeout are only available in Forma for Construction Operations, and the Forma pricing page lists Pype AutoSpecs and AutoSpecs in the Construction Operations bundle (Get a quote; no figures). Re-checked Oct 22, 2026: unchanged; the Forma pricing page still lists Pype AutoSpecs, Pype Closeout and AutoSpecs in the Forma for Construction Operations bundle (Get a Quote; no figures). Re-checked Oct 23, 2026: unchanged (the Autodesk Construction pricing page lists Pype AutoSpecs, Pype Closeout and AutoSpecs under Construction Operations with Get a Quote and no figures). Re-checked Oct 24, 2026: unchanged (the Autodesk Forma pricing page lists Pype AutoSpecs, Pype Closeout and AutoSpecs in the Construction Operations bundle with Get a Quote and no figures). | Not publicly listed (Get My Custom Price form; RIB says pricing depends on organization size and needs, deployable for a single user, on a network or on RIB's cloud servers; free trial and free demo offered). (Checked Oct 16, 2026; unchanged Oct 19, 2026: Get My Custom Pricing form; single user, network or RIB cloud deployment; free trial includes consultation with a specification writer.) Re-checked Oct 20, 2026: unchanged (Get My Custom Pricing form; pricing depends on organization size and needs; single user, network or RIB cloud deployment; free trial with consultation from a specification writer). Re-checked Oct 21, 2026: core SpecLink pricing unchanged (Get My Custom Price form asking quantity of users; pricing depends on organization size and needs; single user, network or RIB cloud deployment; free trial). New: RIB's FAQ says SpecLink + Omni is an add-on to a current SpecLink plan, free for the first 90 days after launch, with tiered pricing for the add-on beginning January 2027 (no figures published). Re-checked Oct 22, 2026: unchanged (Get My Custom Price form; free trial with consultation from a specification writer; no Omni add-on figures published). Re-checked Oct 23, 2026: unchanged (Get My Custom Price form; pricing depends on organization size and needs; single user, network or RIB cloud deployment; free trial with consultation from a specification writer). The Omni FAQ still says the add-on is free for the first 90 days after launch with tiered pricing from January 2027; no figures. Re-checked Oct 24, 2026: unchanged (Get My Custom Price and a free trial with a spec-writer consultation; Omni FAQ says free for 90 days after launch with tiered pricing from January 2027, no figures). |

Where the vendor descriptions differ
- Who uses it: RIB SpecLink is cloud-based specification software for creating and managing specs from a single database, using CSI-standard content, editing by inclusion and smart linking between related requirements. AutoSpecs is part of Autodesk Forma for Construction Operations and is aimed at the team that receives the specs: it extracts submittal information to build a draft submittal log.
- AI: AutoSpecs says its AI identifies action submittals, product data, closeout, QA/QC and tests and inspections, and its Suggested Submittals feature, powered by Construction IQ, compares the spec against historical project data to suggest potentially missing items. RIB sells SpecLink + Omni as an add-on that reasons over the specs, flags cross-division conflicts and traces each answer to source clauses with version stamps and reasoning steps; RIB says nothing changes without the user's review, section by section.
- Versions: AutoSpecs keeps uniquely named spec versions and compares them side by side to show modified submittal requirements. SpecLink lists project sharing, tracked changes and comments in one database to avoid version-control errors.
- Where the output goes: AutoSpecs publishes the submittal log to project management software such as Forma Build and can save it to Forma Data Management; Autodesk lists Pype integrations with BIM 360, Procore, Bluebeam, Egnyte and Box. SpecLink lists direct Revit synchronization and a web-based viewer.
- Pricing: neither publishes figures. Autodesk says Pype AutoSpecs and Pype Closeout are only licensed through the Forma for Construction Operations bundle, which also includes AutoSpecs in Forma. RIB prices SpecLink by organization size and needs (single user, network or RIB cloud) through a custom price form, offers a free trial with spec-writer consultation, and says the Omni add-on is free for the first 90 days after launch with tiered add-on pricing from January 2027.
- Not used here: SpecLink's editing-speed percentage, user and content-section counts and partnership claims, and Autodesk's training-data and time-saving statements.
