BuildingConnected vs SmartBid

Two general-contractor bid management platforms owned by larger data companies: BuildingConnected by Autodesk and SmartBid by ConstructConnect. Both handle invitations to bid, a subcontractor database, prequalification and side-by-side bid comparison. BuildingConnected describes AI features (bidder recommendations, bid forwarding and financial statement extraction in TradeTapp) and sells through quotes, while SmartBid's pages describe no AI and sell an annual licence by number of users. Vendor pages read Oct 22, 2026; desk research, not tested, no winner.

What it doesAutodesk bid management platform: find and qualify subs, send bid invitations, track responses, and compare bids. Autodesk says AI features are available in BuildingConnected Pro, Bid Board Pro, and TradeTapp, for example a Recommendation Engine that suggests bidders by location, trade expertise, and past performance; Bid Forwarding, which pulls key details from bid invitations received outside BuildingConnected into Bid Board; and TradeTapp Financial Data Extraction, which turns PDF financial statements into structured data. Autodesk notes some of its AI features do not use machine learning, and points to its Trust Center for which features use training data (re-checked Oct 16, 2026). Re-checked Oct 19, 2026: the product page still describes Recommendation Engine, Bid Forwarding and TradeTapp Financial Data Extraction under Autodesk AI, and the pricing page still offers Request a Quote with flexible user, project and account-based pricing. Re-checked Oct 21, 2026: unchanged in substance; the page now carries a banner saying Autodesk Construction Cloud is part of Autodesk Forma and product names have been updated. Flag: the product page says over 1,000,000 construction professionals in one line and 1.5M+ in another, and the pricing page says 1.5+ million builders; we use none of these network counts. Re-checked Oct 22, 2026: unchanged in substance; the Forma banner is still shown, the product family is still BuildingConnected Pro for GCs and owners, Bid Board Pro for subcontractors and TradeTapp for qualification, and the AI FAQ still describes Recommendation Engine, Bid Forwarding and TradeTapp Financial Data Extraction with the Trust Center note. The pages name Autodesk Docs and Autodesk Build Cost Management (turning winning bids into contracts) as integrations. Network and percentage figures and customer quotes on the pages are not used here.Bid management for GCs, now part of ConstructConnect, covering invites, a plan room, a sub database and bid comparison. Bids can be compared side by side. It is web-based and mobile; users send invitations to bid from templates, an online plan room with tracking of which subcontractors view and download plans, a private subcontractor database (organize by trade, location, minority status), prequalification with a ConsensusDocs 721 form integration and a custom questionnaire builder, and BidTabs for comparing subcontractor bid submissions side by side. Integrations listed include Procore, Autodesk BIM 360, Dropbox and the ConstructConnect sub network. The pages we read do not describe AI features. Re-checked Oct 19, 2026: the homepage and construction-bid-software-pricing page still list Annual Standard License by number of users (sub database, ConsensusDocs 721 prequal, unlimited plan room/ITBs, BidTabs, API, setup and training, live support), free access for invited subcontractors, and faxing at 8 cents per page; smartbid.co/pricing returns 404 and the working pricing URL is /construction-bid-software-pricing. Re-checked Oct 20, 2026: the pricing page is unchanged in substance (same license contents; Procore, Autodesk BIM 360, Dropbox and ConstructConnect Network integrations; on-site training at extra cost), and the pages we read still do not describe AI features. Re-checked Oct 21, 2026: homepage and pricing page unchanged in substance (ITBs from templates, plan room with view/download tracking, private sub database, ConsensusDocs 721 prequal, BidTabs, Procore, Autodesk BIM 360, Dropbox and ConstructConnect integrations); the pages we read still do not describe AI features, and the footer still shows a 2025 copyright. Re-checked Oct 22, 2026: unchanged; the pages still describe no AI features and the footer still reads 2025. Customer quotes are not used here.

Where the vendor descriptions differ

  • Bid invitations and sub database: BuildingConnected Pro lists unlimited access to Autodesk's Builders Network, unlimited bid invitations and projects, custom bid forms, and bid leveling and cost comparison with historical bid data. SmartBid lists a private subcontractor database (by trade, location and minority status), invitations from templates, an online plan room that tracks which subs view and download plans, sub and supplier search through the ConstructConnect network, and BidTabs for comparing bids side by side.
  • Prequalification: BuildingConnected sells TradeTapp separately, with custom questionnaires, automated risk assessment, project-specific approvals, custom financial calculations and ERP or backlog integration. SmartBid includes ConsensusDocs 721 prequalification and a custom questionnaire builder in its standard licence.
  • AI (our reading): BuildingConnected is tagged AI features added to an established product; Autodesk describes a Recommendation Engine that suggests bidders by location, trade and past performance, Bid Forwarding that pulls details from invitations received outside the platform into Bid Board, and TradeTapp Financial Data Extraction, and says some of these features do not use machine learning. SmartBid is tagged not AI-first; the pages we read describe no AI features.
  • Integrations: BuildingConnected names Autodesk Docs and Autodesk Build Cost Management (turning winning bids into contracts) and sits in the Forma for Preconstruction bundle. SmartBid lists Procore, Autodesk BIM 360, Dropbox and ConstructConnect integrations, a full API, and web plus Android, iOS and Windows apps.
  • Pricing (checked Oct 22, 2026): neither publishes dollar prices. BuildingConnected Pro, Bid Board Pro and TradeTapp are each Request a Quote with flexible user, project and account-based pricing, a 30-day money-back guarantee and a Forma for Preconstruction bundle. SmartBid sells an Annual Standard License by number of users (sub database, ConsensusDocs 721 prequal, plan room, BidTabs, API, setup and online training, live support), with invited subcontractors free, faxing at 8 cents per page and on-site training at extra cost.
  • Subcontractor side: invited subs bid free on both. Autodesk also sells Bid Board Pro to subcontractors for tracking invitations, a subcontractor-side product the SmartBid pages we read do not describe.
  • Not used here: Autodesk's network size and percentage figures and customer quotes, and SmartBid's customer quotes (vendor material). Neither tool has been tested by Means & Methods Lab.

Questions to ask in your review

  • What each costs for your number of estimators and projects
  • How many of your regular subs are already active on each network
  • Whether BuildingConnected's bidder recommendations surface subs you would not have invited
  • How bid-day leveling compares on your own bid packages
  • What did you use it for, on what kind of work and project size?
  • How long did setup and training take, and who on your team did it?
