MeltPlan vs BuildCrew.AI
Two AI-first precon tools that read plans and specs to write trade scopes, level sub bids and flag document gaps before buyout. Close to like-for-like on bid week (our reading): MeltPlan sells separate products for bid leveling, document review, estimator-reviewed takeoff and code research, priced on square footage, while BuildCrew.AI pitches "Digital Interns" for precon RFIs, trade scoping, bid leveling and ROM estimates with a free self-serve start. Compared using only vendor pages re-read Oct 17, 2026; desk research, not tested, no winner.
In short: MeltPlan (AI preconstruction; no public prices (quote / sales)) vs BuildCrew.AI (AI precon coworker; no public prices (quote / sales)). Facts last checked Oct 17, 2026. No winner declared; not tested.

| What it does | AI-first preconstruction platform for GCs, from concept to GMP: document review, quantity takeoff, scope sheets, bid leveling and code research. Products are Melt Bid (scoping, tabulation and leveling into your own bid tally template, in a web app or Excel plugin, with every value linked to its source proposal), Melt Review (document review and precon reports on hidden costs), Melt Takeoff (AI quantities reviewed by experienced estimators) and Melt Code; its FAQ also names Melt Schedule. It names integrations with Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Box and BuildingConnected, and says customer data is never used to train models. Vendor claims 10x precon output and 95%+ accuracy (vendor claims). | "Digital Coworker" for general contractor preconstruction teams, covering precon RFIs, trade scoping, bid leveling and ROM estimates. The vendor says it reads the full drawing and spec set to return every trade with a written scope, flags scope gaps and spec-versus-drawing conflicts and drafts RFIs with sheet and grid references, normalizes sub bids for comparison, and generates line-by-line estimates through its estimating agent Cody. Its how-it-works page describes "Digital Interns" for coordination, site and compliance tasks too, and its about page says the team created HoloBuilder. Free start with Google or Microsoft sign-in, no credit card (vendor statement). |

Where the vendor descriptions differ
- Scope (vendor wording): MeltPlan calls itself an "AI-First Preconstruction Platform for General Contractors" from concept to GMP, with Melt Bid (bid scoping, tabulation and leveling), Melt Review (construction document review), Melt Takeoff (quantity takeoff), Melt Code (building code research) and, per its FAQ, Melt Schedule. BuildCrew.AI calls its product the "Digital Coworker" and its agents "Digital Interns" for precon RFIs, trade scoping, bid leveling and ROM creation; its how-it-works page also describes Digital Interns for project coordination, site tasks and compliance and safety. BuildCrew's about page says it comes from the creators of HoloBuilder, the 360° reality capture product.
- Scopes and document review: MeltPlan says Melt Bid reads your plans and specs and applies best practices from past projects to generate a scope list for every trade, and Melt Review surfaces design changes, inconsistencies and missing requirements and produces precon reports on hidden costs such as sole-source items, testing requirements and mockups. BuildCrew says it reads the full drawing and spec set and returns every trade the project needs with a written scope for each, flags buyout packages, specialist trades and scope gaps, and reviews documents for gaps, spec-versus-drawing contradictions and details never issued, then drafts the RFI with the sheet and grid reference filled in.
- Bid leveling: MeltPlan says Melt Bid levels sub proposals received as PDFs, Word, Excel or emails into your own bid tally template in 2-5 minutes, in a web app and an Excel plugin kept in sync; every value links to its source proposal, the AI marks where it was not confident, gaps can be plugged with the average, median or maximum of received bids, and clarification emails to subs are drafted automatically; a cost database fed by every leveled bid is marked coming soon. BuildCrew says it normalizes bid data for apples-to-apples comparison and identifies scope gaps, cost discrepancies and hidden risks across subcontractor bids; its pages give fewer workflow details.
- Estimates and takeoff: MeltPlan says Melt Takeoff quantities are pulled from plans by AI and reviewed and completed by experienced US estimators, and that GMP actuals, sub pricing and scope patterns feed back into future estimates. BuildCrew says its agents generate line-by-line cost estimates in minutes from industry data, project specs and historical costs, that its estimating agent Cody shows cost drivers and ties contingency to specific unknowns in the set, and that you can upload your own historical costs, rates and schedule data; its how-it-works page also describes AI review of plans against building codes, with a "Coming soon" label in that section.
- Human review and AI claims (vendor statements, not verified): MeltPlan says AI takes the first pass and estimators finish, and claims 95%+ accuracy across its tools from purpose-built models trained on construction data with guardrails, against 75-80% for frontier models; its pages do not publish a test method. BuildCrew describes a Reasoning Engine whose "topics" set which actions a Digital Intern can and cannot take, assistive interns that work in the flow of work and autonomous ones that escalate to your team, and publishes no accuracy figure.
- Data and security: MeltPlan says data is encrypted at rest and in transit, isolated per organization, never used to train its or third-party models ("contractually guaranteed"), and fully exported and deleted with written confirmation if you leave; it publishes a security disclosure policy (last updated March 2026) but the pages we read did not state a certification. The BuildCrew pages we read do not describe data handling, training use or certifications.
- Connections: MeltPlan's FAQ names Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Box and BuildingConnected plus its Excel plugin. BuildCrew offers sign-up with Google or Microsoft and says Digital Interns take action across any system; we did not find a list of connectors.
- Getting started and pricing: MeltPlan prices on the square footage you run through the platform, with a per-square-foot rate that drops at set volume tiers, unlimited users, projects and storage, bundle pricing across products and dedicated onboarding; rates come by custom quote. BuildCrew offers a free start with Google or Microsoft sign-in, no credit card and "no onboarding or demos needed", but has no pricing page (buildcrew.ai/pricing returned a not-found page on Oct 17, 2026) and does not say what paid use costs; its footer reads © 2025. MeltPlan's hours-saved figures and customer quotes are not used here.

What we can't tell you yet
Which tool is better for your work. That needs testing on the same package with a verified answer key. Planned measures for this comparison:
- How many scope lines and bid inclusions or exclusions each gets right on a package your team already leveled by hand
- How each handles your bid tally template and the formats your subs actually send
- What paid use costs: MeltPlan's square-foot rate for your volume, and BuildCrew's terms after the free start
