Downtobid vs SmartBid
Two ways for a general contractor to send invitations to bid and track sub coverage. Downtobid is AI-first: it reads an uploaded plan set, detects trade packages and drafts scope notes, then sends personalized invites from the GC's own email, with published monthly prices. SmartBid, part of ConstructConnect, is a long-running bid management platform with a plan room, private sub database, ConsensusDocs 721 prequalification and BidTabs, sold as an annual license by user count. Vendor pages read Oct 21, 2026; desk research, not tested, no winner.
In short: Downtobid (Bid management; vendor publishes prices) vs SmartBid (ConstructConnect) (Bid management & bid leveling; no public prices (quote / sales)). Facts last checked Oct 21, 2026. No winner declared; not tested.

| What it does | Bid management software where AI reads uploaded plan sets, detects trade packages, and drafts scope notes for GCs' invitations to bid. GCs send personalized ITBs from their own email and track coverage. Subs get a bid board for invites, deadlines, and RFIs. Dodge Construction Network now lists "Bid Board by Downtobid" as part of the Dodge family; Downtobid's own site still sells it. Re-read Oct 17, 2026 (rendered in headless Chrome; curl gets a bot check): the homepage says nothing goes out without the GC's review, invites carry each sub's scope summary, relevant sheets and the GC's branding, and sub lists import by CSV with matching to Downtobid's database and duplicate flags; a case study cites 15 minutes vs 2+ hours to build packages and 3.8 vs 1.9 bids per package (vendor case study, not verified). Re-checked Oct 19, 2026: (headless Chrome) unchanged in substance; the FAQ now describes transparent per-user pricing versus revenue-percentage pricing even though its price answer quotes a per-organization starting price, so confirm the billing unit. A GH Pastor case study cites 15+ hours saved per week (vendor case study, not verified). Dodge's Bid Board page still sells Bid Board by Downtobid. Re-checked Oct 20, 2026 (headless Chrome): unchanged in substance; the FAQ still pairs a per-organization starting price with a line about transparent per-user pricing, so confirm the billing unit. The homepage also links comparison pages against BuildingConnected, SmartBid, ConstructConnect, PlanHub, Pantera Tools, Procore and BidMail (vendor framing). The MRI Builders quote and GH Pastor case-study figures are vendor material not used as findings. Re-checked Oct 21, 2026 (headless Chrome; curl got a rate-limit response): homepage unchanged in substance; it now presents Downtobid as an alternative to BuildingConnected, iSqFt, PlanHub and SmartBid (vendor framing), and the sub-side copy lists getting on more bid lists, one deadline calendar and estimator assignment to stop double-bidding. downtobid.com/pricing returns a not-found page; prices are still only in the FAQ. | Bid management for GCs, now part of ConstructConnect, covering invites, a plan room, a sub database and bid comparison. Bids can be compared side by side. It is web-based and mobile; users send invitations to bid from templates, an online plan room with tracking of which subcontractors view and download plans, a private subcontractor database (organize by trade, location, minority status), prequalification with a ConsensusDocs 721 form integration and a custom questionnaire builder, and BidTabs for comparing subcontractor bid submissions side by side. Integrations listed include Procore, Autodesk BIM 360, Dropbox and the ConstructConnect sub network. The pages we read do not describe AI features. Re-checked Oct 19, 2026: the homepage and construction-bid-software-pricing page still list Annual Standard License by number of users (sub database, ConsensusDocs 721 prequal, unlimited plan room/ITBs, BidTabs, API, setup and training, live support), free access for invited subcontractors, and faxing at 8 cents per page; smartbid.co/pricing returns 404 and the working pricing URL is /construction-bid-software-pricing. Re-checked Oct 20, 2026: the pricing page is unchanged in substance (same license contents; Procore, Autodesk BIM 360, Dropbox and ConstructConnect Network integrations; on-site training at extra cost), and the pages we read still do not describe AI features. Re-checked Oct 21, 2026: homepage and pricing page unchanged in substance (ITBs from templates, plan room with view/download tracking, private sub database, ConsensusDocs 721 prequal, BidTabs, Procore, Autodesk BIM 360, Dropbox and ConstructConnect integrations); the pages we read still do not describe AI features, and the footer still shows a 2025 copyright. |
| Who it's for | Commercial general contractors and subcontractors. | General contractors' preconstruction and bid teams; subcontractors invited to bid or prequalify get access at no cost. |
| Pricing (as publicly stated) | Vendor FAQ: starts at $149/month per organization for GCs; for subs, the "leads" bid board starts at $119/mo and full bid management at $299/mo. Subs can access planrooms and submit bids free. Re-checked Oct 17, 2026: unchanged. Re-checked Oct 19, 2026: unchanged. Where the vendor descriptions differ
- Building bid packages: Downtobid says its AI reads every sheet, identifies trade packages and drafts initial scope notes, and that nothing goes out until the GC reviews and edits it. SmartBid's pages describe invitations built from custom communications or a template library and do not describe AI.
- Invites and tracking: Downtobid sends each sub a personalized ITB from the GC's own email with that sub's scope summary, relevant sheets and the GC's branding, and tracks who opened, who is bidding and who needs a nudge. SmartBid sends ITBs from one central location, gives subs customized plan-room access and tracks which subs view and download plan files.
- Sub data and prequalification: Downtobid imports sub lists by CSV, matches them to its database, fills missing info and flags duplicates. SmartBid manages a private sub database organized by trade, location and minority status, adds sub and supplier search through the ConstructConnect network, and offers prequalification with a ConsensusDocs 721 form integration and a custom questionnaire builder.
- Bid comparison and integrations: SmartBid lists BidTabs for comparing sub bids side by side, full API access, website integration for sub registration and public project lists, and Procore, Autodesk BIM 360, Dropbox and ConstructConnect integrations. Downtobid's homepage describes no bid-leveling tool and names no integrations.
- For subcontractors: Downtobid says subs open planrooms and submit bids free, and can upgrade to its Bid Board for invites, deadlines, RFIs and estimator assignment. SmartBid says subs invited to bid or prequalify get access at no cost.
- Pricing (checked Oct 21, 2026): Downtobid's FAQ says it starts at $149 a month for your organization for GCs, $119 a month for the sub leads bid board and $299 a month for full sub bid management; the same FAQ also describes per-user pricing, so confirm the billing unit. SmartBid's pricing page lists an Annual Standard License scaled by number of users with no dollar figures, faxing at 8 cents a page and on-site training at extra cost.
- Not used here: Downtobid's customer quote and GH Pastor case-study figures, its comparison pages naming SmartBid, and SmartBid's customer quotes and number-one claims (vendor material). Neither tool has been tested by Means & Methods Lab.
