"AI-first" vs "AI feature": what the tags on Means & Methods Lab mean
Every tool page carries an AI-role tag. It describes how the vendor's own product is built and marketed, based on desk research. It is not a quality score: an AI-first tool is not better or worse because of the tag.
The questions (5)
Q01AI-first
WHY IT MATTERS · The product's core job depends on AI. Examples: Togal.AI and Kreo for takeoff, Karmen and ALICE for scheduling, Firmus and Buildcheck for drawing review, viAct for safety monitoring.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU · Expect the AI to be in every plan. Your main risk is accuracy and correction time, so test on your own documents.
Q02AI features added to established product
WHY IT MATTERS · An existing product with AI capabilities layered on. Examples: STACK, Countfire, DESTINI Estimator, AGTEK, Part3, and SitesAI Estimate (AI is a separate plan).
WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU · Check which tier includes the AI, whether it is released or beta, and whether the underlying workflow is still the same if you turn the AI off.
Q03Not AI-first
WHY IT MATTERS · The vendor pages we checked do not describe AI as part of the product, or AI is not central. Examples: HCSS HeavyBid, B2W Estimate, SmartPM, Ediphi, Propeller. Many are core systems estimators rely on.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU · Listed because estimators use them and AI tools must hand data to them. Ask AI vendors how they connect.
Q04How we assign the tag
WHY IT MATTERS · From the vendor's own pages on the date shown on each tool page. If the homepage does not describe AI, we do not assume it.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU · Tags can change as products change; each tool page shows the date its facts were last checked.
Q05What the tag does not tell you
WHY IT MATTERS · It says nothing about accuracy, price, support, or fit. Vendor claims on tool pages are labeled as claims.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU · Use the tag to choose what to ask, then use our trial guide to test.
