AI for reality capture and progress tracking in 2026: BIM, turnaround, and who checks the numbers
ROUNDUP · PUBLISHED · UPDATED · SOURCES CHECKED OCT 15, 2026
Reality capture tools photograph or scan the jobsite; progress-tracking tools turn those captures into percent-complete figures against a plan or schedule. We re-read seven vendors' own pages on Oct 15, 2026 and sorted what they say about inputs, turnaround, human review, capture hardware, and pricing. Every figure below is as stated by the vendor on that date; nothing here is a test result or a recommendation.
A visual record and a progress number are two different products
This is our framing, not a vendor claim: a visual record answers what the site looked like on a given date, and a progress number answers how much of the planned work is in place. Several vendors package the two separately, so it helps to know which one you are being quoted.
OpenSpace sells progress tracking as OpenSpace Track, an add-on to its Core or Enterprise subscription. Track3D's homepage announces a new commercial model with visual documentation at no additional cost. Hexagon Multivista says customers can start with documentation and add analysis, such as building progress reporting, only when the project needs it.
Do you need a BIM model or a schedule?
The vendors differ most on inputs. Doxel's process starts with sending BIM, then walking the site with a 360 camera mounted to a hard hat. Hexagon Multivista's FAQ says building progress reporting for new construction requires a federated 3D model in NWD format, a schedule in P6 or Excel, and 360° photos from approved apps.
Others say a model is optional. OpenSpace says BIM is not required for Track, though a model can be incorporated. DroneDeploy says Progress AI has no prerequisites and detects progress from imagery without a schedule or BIM. Track3D says no BIM model is required to start. Buildots says it gives a view of the entire project even if the model is incomplete.
Turnaround and setup, as each vendor states it
DroneDeploy says a Progress AI report arrives within two hours of upload and that Progress AI goes live in under an hour. Track3D says visuals are available 30 minutes from capture and progress data in 6 hours, with the qualifier “conditions apply.” OpenSpace says imagery is ready in 15 minutes on average and Track progress reports arrive in 24 to 48 hours.
Hexagon Multivista says reports are typically available 48 to 72 hours after 360 images are posted and that setup can take up to 6 to 8 weeks depending on project complexity. Doxel says setup takes less than 2 weeks. These are vendor statements; we have not timed any of them.
Who checks the AI's work
Two vendors say people review the output. OpenSpace describes Track as AI-powered tracking with humans in the loop. Hexagon Multivista says its technology detects progress automatically and expert analysts QA every update. Buildots describes a local team that helps set up on site and stays with leaders for the whole build, plus forward-deployed specialists on major projects.
DroneDeploy positions Progress AI against what it calls legacy “AI-powered” solutions that need weeks of setup and a dedicated BIM model (vendor claim). The pages we read for DroneDeploy, Track3D, and Doxel do not describe a human review step for each report, which is a question worth asking rather than a finding.
Capture hardware
DroneDeploy says Progress AI works with any 360 camera or drone and processes aerial and ground 360 walks in the same session; its platform also supports docked drones, ground robots, and fixed cameras. OpenSpace captures photos, video, voice notes, 360 walks, and drone flights. Reconstruct says virtually anyone on site can capture with a smartphone, 360 camera, or drone, and that it turns that footage into measurable 2D floor plans, orthophotos, point clouds, and mesh models.
Hexagon Multivista's building progress FAQ is narrower: it says drone and SLR photos are not supported for that service, though its separate earthwork progress reporting uses UAV capture. Doxel lists drone imagery for early phases alongside its hard-hat 360 camera.
Not every capture vendor calls itself AI
Reconstruct's pages describe reality mapping, photogrammetry, design overlay, and 4D schedule visualization, with per-activity percent complete and root cause of delay entered with voice notes and annotated pictures. They do not describe AI, so our directory tags Reconstruct Not AI-first.
Hexagon's Oct 6, 2022 release said it would integrate AVVIR's AI-powered technology, which it described as automated schedule tracking, cost and earned value analysis, installation issue detection, and as-built BIM updates. Hexagon Multivista's 2026 Analyze services page describes deviation analysis as an AI-driven model-to-scan comparison. We did not find a Hexagon page that names AVVIR as the engine of the building progress service, so we do not claim it is.
Pricing
None of the seven publishes a dollar price for progress tracking. OpenSpace is quote-based on annual construction volume and tier, and its Track FAQ says the add-on is priced on project type and scope tracked. Doxel's pricing FAQ says it generally charges by the square foot. Reconstruct's pricing page offers personalized pricing. Buildots, Track3D, and Hexagon Multivista list no prices on the pages we read.
DroneDeploy's pricing page, at our Oct 14 check, listed team plans as custom quotes and an individual Flight & Analysis plan at $4,188 billed annually; its Progress AI page invites readers to request early access, and our directory lists Progress AI as an add-on.
What to ask before a pilot
These are our suggestions, not findings. Ask for a percent-complete report on an area your team has already counted by hand, and compare the two. Ask whether a person reviews each report before you see it, and how corrections are logged. Ask what happens to accuracy when the model is incomplete or out of date, and which capture devices are supported for the progress product specifically, not just the platform.
Takeaways
- Find out whether you are buying a visual record, a progress number, or both; several vendors price them separately.
- Input requirements range from none (DroneDeploy, Track3D, OpenSpace say BIM is optional) to an NWD model plus a P6 or Excel schedule (Hexagon Multivista).
- Stated turnaround runs from about two hours (DroneDeploy) to 48–72 hours (Hexagon Multivista); these are vendor claims.
- OpenSpace and Hexagon Multivista say humans review AI progress output; ask the others directly.
- No vendor here publishes a dollar price for progress tracking.
