TraceAir vs Skydio

Two drone-based routes to site data, bought in very different ways. Not like-for-like (our reading): TraceAir is a fully managed drone and LiDAR site-intelligence service for homebuilders and land developers (it handles flights, capture, processing and hosting), with earthwork, drainage, lot-grade and lot-yield tools. Skydio makes autonomous drones, docks and software that customers fly or dock themselves for asset inspection, mapping (including construction site progress), security and public safety. Neither publishes prices. Desk research from vendor sites read Nov 3, 2026; no winner.

What it doesDrone and LiDAR site intelligence for homebuilders and land developers across land acquisition, land development, vertical construction and portfolio oversight. Tools listed: a Lot Yield Estimator (Layout Generator) that turns raw land into lot yields, LiDAR scans, earthwork cut/fill and stockpile quantities, stormwater slope and drainage reports, lot grade verification (Lot Viewer), TraceWalk 360 interior scanning, a time-stamped site history, and licensed ALTA and topographic surveys in select states through TraceAir Surveying Inc. Its footer says TraceAir drone scans are not licensed surveys and may not be relied on as such. The pages we read do not describe the AI in detail, so we tag it AI features added. Builder counts, award badges and customer quotes are not used.Maker of autonomous drones ("flying robots") and software for asset inspection, site mapping, security and drone-as-first-responder use. Products: X10 and X10D with attachments, Dock for X10, R10 (a compact indoor drone for confined, cluttered and zero-light spaces such as tanks and tunnels), F10 Lightrunner (an autonomous, dock-based fixed-wing aircraft for long-range missions) with MegaDock, and Command software for DFR, security, assets and ISR, plus Ops Center, 3D Scan, Skydio Autonomy, Skydio Connect and Skydio Paraverse. Uses include asset inspection (bridges, utilities, oil & gas), surveying and mapping including Construction Site Progress, physical security, drone-as-first-responder and national security. The Bridge Inspection page describes GPS-independent six-camera navigation under bridges, photogrammetry, video and thermal capture, 3D Scan with Onboard Modeling and export to the user's photogrammetry software; the Asset Command page describes missions built from GIS or CMMS asset inventories, per-asset-type capture standards, recurring cycles, docked missions without a pilot on site and written prompts turned into flight plans. Autonomy is the core of the product, so we tag it AI-first. Agency counts, time and cost claims, savings figures and customer quotes are not used.

Pricing (as publicly stated)Not publicly listed. The pricing page says pricing varies by acreage, service frequency and site conditions and is scoped on request through a build-your-quote form; the only dollar figure on the page is a referral bonus, not a price. The pricing FAQ says TraceAir is a fully managed, turnkey service (it handles flights, data capture, processing and hosting), projects get unlimited users, scan data is typically available within 24 hours of a flight, surveys through TraceAir Surveying are offered only in California, North Carolina, Florida and Nevada (topographic in about 7-10 business days, ALTA in about 12-15), bundled TraceWalk and Layout Generator pricing is available, and project data stays accessible after a complimentary period through a post-project data subscription. Not publicly listed. The vendor site has no pricing or plans link, and /pricing and /plans return a not-found page. Sales go through Skydio and resellers; the Resources menu lists Purchasing, Resellers and Contracts, with no prices. Confirm current pricing with the vendor.

Where the vendor descriptions differ

  • What you buy: TraceAir's pricing FAQ calls it a fully managed, turnkey service, so the customer does not fly. Skydio sells hardware (X10 and X10D, Dock for X10, the R10 indoor drone, and the F10 Lightrunner fixed-wing aircraft with MegaDock) and software (Command, Ops Center, 3D Scan, Skydio Autonomy, Skydio Connect), sold through Skydio and resellers.
  • Who it is for: TraceAir names homebuilders and land developers, from land acquisition and land development through vertical construction and portfolio oversight. Skydio names public safety agencies, utilities, infrastructure owners, construction and engineering firms and national security customers.
  • Site outputs: TraceAir lists a Lot Yield Estimator (Layout Generator), LiDAR scans, earthwork cut/fill and stockpile quantities, stormwater slope and drainage reports, lot grade verification (Lot Viewer), TraceWalk 360 interior scanning and a time-stamped site history, and says scan data is typically available within 24 hours of a flight. Skydio lists 3D Scan with Onboard Modeling and export to the user's own photogrammetry software, and its Asset Command page describes missions built from GIS or CMMS asset inventories, docked missions without a pilot on site and written prompts turned into flight plans.
  • Surveys: TraceAir's footer says its drone scans are not licensed surveys; licensed ALTA and topographic surveys are offered through TraceAir Surveying Inc. only in California, North Carolina, Florida and Nevada. The Skydio pages we read do not offer survey services.
  • AI tags: we tag Skydio AI-first, because autonomy is the core of the product. TraceAir's pages do not describe its AI in detail, so we tag it AI features added.
  • Pricing (read Nov 3, 2026): TraceAir says pricing varies by acreage, service frequency and site conditions and is scoped through a build-your-quote form, with unlimited users per project and a post-project data subscription. Skydio has no pricing page; its Resources menu lists Purchasing, Resellers and Contracts with no prices. See each tool page for detail.
  • Not used here: TraceAir's builder counts, award badges and customer quotes, and Skydio's agency counts, time and cost claims and customer quotes (vendor material). Facts for both tools come from vendor websites (desk research).

What users say

The facts above come from vendor websites. Whether either tool is any good for your work is something only people who use them can say. These are member reviews, all ratings shown, never edited or removed for being negative.

Good or bad, an honest review from an estimator, PM or super helps the next team more than another vendor demo. You post under a handle; your email is never shown.

Questions to ask in your review

  • Whether a managed service or owning drones costs less for your number of sites and flight frequency
  • Who handles pilot certification and airspace approvals on your sites under each model
  • Whether either output meets your engineer's or surveyor's accuracy needs for earthwork quantities
  • What did you use it for, on what kind of work and project size?
  • How long did setup and training take, and who on your team did it?
  • What does it cost you in practice, compared with what the sales call said?
