Trayd vs Lumber
Two construction payroll platforms built around certified payroll, prevailing wage and union rules, with HR and field time alongside. Trayd adds accounting (general ledger, AP/AR, WIP, AIA billing, change orders) for trade contractors and describes no AI. Lumber adds AI agents for certified payroll, union rates, paper timecards, COIs, apprentice ratios and workers' comp that can also run on top of an ERP or payroll system you already use. Close to like-for-like on certified and union payroll; they differ on accounting and AI. Desk research from vendor sites read Oct 31, 2026; no winner.

| What it does | Payroll and back-office software for trade contractors, with certified payroll, union and prevailing-wage support, job costing and AIA billing. It offers construction payroll with automated certified payroll, union management and prevailing-wage support, HR and onboarding, scheduling and dispatch, field and labor tracking with worker and foreman apps and daily shift reports, real-time job costing, WIP schedules, retainage and lien waivers, AIA billing, change orders, and accounting (general ledger, financial statements, AP/AR, cash management), which it launched in a Sept. 24, 2026 article. Support is described as dedicated account management and an in-house bilingual English and Spanish team based in the USA. The pages we read do not describe AI features. Y Combinator batch: Summer 2023 (YC company profile). Speed claims, customer quotes and competitor comparisons are vendor content and are not used. | Construction workforce platform for payroll, HR, compliance and field operations, with AI agents for certified payroll and other compliance work. The vendor describes it as "Built for Construction. Powered by AI." and lists a free AI audit tool and a feature that turns collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) into AI insights you can chat with. Menus list payroll (prevailing wages, union payroll and reporting, certified payroll, workers' compensation, tax filing, remittances, Record of Employment), field operations (time tracking, schedule and dispatch, equipment and productivity tracking, form builder, job costing, safety) and HR and benefits (applicant tracking, onboarding, credential management, a learning management system). Its Agent Center lists Union, Certified Payroll Reporting, Funding, Certificate of Insurance, Paper Timecard, Union Reporting, Apprentice Ratio, Workers' Comp and tax notice agents that it says can run on top of an existing ERP or HCM (Acumatica, Sage, Viewpoint, Procore, Knowify, ServiceTitan, ADP, Workday, COINS) by API or CSV/file upload, routing exceptions to a person when rules conflict or data is incomplete; LumberCare pairs CPAs and prevailing wage specialists with the agents. The certified payroll page lists WH-347 automation, wage determinations applied by location, classification, craft and contract schedule, validation of rates, fringes, overtime, classification and apprentice rates before reports are generated, AI scanning for missing entries or anomalies, and PDF, XML or CSV export for LCP, DIR, eMars and Elation. The vendor says customer data is never used to train third-party AI models and that Lumber is SOC 2 Type II audited (vendor statements). The site serves region-specific content; the homepage we were served described Canadian payroll. The processing-time percentage is a vendor claim and is not used. |

Where the vendor descriptions differ
- Payroll compliance (vendor statements): Trayd says labor hours, wage rates and worker classifications are captured in the field and fed into certified payroll reports, with union management and compliance reporting at no extra cost. Lumber's certified payroll page says it ingests federal and state prevailing wage determinations, validates rates, fringes, overtime, classifications and apprentice rates before reports are generated, and exports PDF, XML or CSV for submission to systems such as LCP, DIR, eMars and Elation.
- Beyond payroll: Trayd's menu lists HR and onboarding, benefits, scheduling and dispatch, worker and foreman apps with a daily shift report, real-time job costing, WIP schedules, project-level P&L, retainage and lien waivers, change orders, AIA billing and a general ledger with AP/AR. Lumber's menu lists time tracking, schedule and dispatch, equipment and productivity tracking, a form builder, job costing, safety management, HR (applicant tracking, onboarding, benefits, credentials, a learning management system) and financial services such as workers' comp insurance and earned wage access; the pages we read do not describe a general ledger.
- AI (vendor descriptions): Lumber's Agent Center lists Union, Certified Payroll Reporting, Funding, Paper Timecard, Certificate of Insurance, Union Reporting, Apprentice Ratio and Workers' Comp agents. Its FAQ says agents run on scoped, permission-based access, most customers start read-only with their team approving output, and when rules conflict or data is incomplete the exception routes to a person; LumberCare adds CPAs and prevailing wage specialists. Trayd's homepage does not describe AI features. Tags: Lumber AI-first, Trayd Not AI-first.
- Keep your current system? Lumber says its agents can run on top of an existing ERP or payroll system by API or CSV, without a Lumber account, and lists connectors including Acumatica, Sage, Viewpoint, Procore, Knowify, ServiceTitan, ADP, Workday, COINS and CMiC. Trayd positions itself as the payroll and accounting system you switch to.
- Support (vendor statements): Trayd says it offers dedicated account management and an in-house, USA-based bilingual (English and Spanish) support team. Lumber points to LumberCare, with CPAs and prevailing wage specialists working alongside its agents.
- Region: Lumber's site serves US and Canadian content; the Canadian pages describe multi-province payroll, CCQ and CRA remittances. Trayd's pages we read describe US payroll only.
- Pricing (checked Oct 31, 2026): neither publishes prices. Trayd's /pricing returns a not-found page; its homepage promises transparent pricing with no hidden fees. Lumber's /pricing returns a not-found page; its agent FAQ says Premium Agents are a flat monthly fee based on complexity and volume, with bundle pricing for more than one agent.
- Not used here: Trayd's payroll-time and admin-reduction figures, its ADP and Sage comparison, and customer quotes; Lumber's processing-time percentage, customer stories and logos (vendor content). Facts for both tools come from vendor websites (desk research).
