Clearstory vs Trimble Pay
Two tools that sit between general contractors and their subcontractors on money paperwork, at different steps. Only partly like-for-like (our reading): Clearstory handles change orders and signed T&M tags, with AI agents mostly in open beta and a free Basic plan, while Trimble Pay (formerly Flashtract) handles AIA pay apps, lien waivers, compliance and subcontractor payments inside Trimble Construction One and does not describe AI. Desk research from vendor sites read Nov 3, 2026; no winner.
In short: Clearstory (Change orders & T&M tags; free option; paid prices not listed) vs Trimble Pay (formerly Flashtract) (Subcontractor billing, lien waivers & payments; no public prices (quote / sales)). Facts last checked Nov 3, 2026. No winner declared; desk research from vendor sites.

| Sheet row | Clearstory | Trimble Pay (formerly Flashtract) |

| AI role (our label) | AI features added to established product | Not AI-first |
| What it does | Change order platform (formerly Extracker) for GCs, specialty contractors and owners, with signed digital T&M tags and shared COR logs. It also lists change order request (COR) logs shared between parties, rate libraries, allowances and contingencies, backcharges, analytics (days aging, ball in court) and ERP/PM integrations. The Clearstory AI page lists four agents: the COR Pricing Agent (Open Beta; send a voice note, attach a takeoff or upload your own priced estimate, and it drafts the COR and pulls rates from the project library, or picks up your numbers if you already price work in your own tools; you edit before it is sent), the T&M Tag Agent (Open Beta; transcribes a voice note with built-in Spanish-to-English translation, matches work against the project rate library, prompts for anything missing and drafts a tag ready for signature), the COR Review Agent (Closed Beta; reviews incoming CORs against your checklist, validates rates against approved schedules, confirms backup documentation and prepares a response package) and the Change Notification Agent (Open Beta; analyzes a design change, identifies impacted trades, flags missing information to raise with the architect, estimates internal cost exposure and drafts the change notification for review). It also groups a Bulk AI Import Agent and an AI Reason Categories Agent under "Beyond the Four Agents". Account owners, admins and PMs can turn AI off for the company or for individual projects, and the pricing FAQ and AI page say customer data is never used to train public or private AI models (vendor statement). Both pages carry a SOC 2 Type II badge. Clearstory's network, dollar-volume and time-saved figures differ between its pages and are not used. | Trimble's subcontractor billing and payment product for pay apps, lien waivers and compliance. Trimble says it is formerly Flashtract (which joined Trimble in 2024) and part of Trimble Construction One; flashtract.com/pricing redirects to the Trimble Pay page. It lists collecting AIA pay apps from subcontractors and automatically checking them for accuracy, calculating subcontractor billing amounts automatically once subs enter labor and material costs, one-click approval of pay apps and lien waivers, unconditional lien waivers held in escrow until payment, compliance tracking with expiration dates, secure payments with approvals, holds and reviews, and subcontractor/vendor lien risk management; it runs in a browser. The legacy Flashtract homepage also lists 2nd-tier and vendor waivers, fully managed ACH and blocking pay apps with unapproved change orders or math errors. Integrations listed: CMiC, Procore, Sage 300, Trimble Spectrum and Trimble Vista. The pages we read do not describe AI. Network user counts and case-study figures are vendor content and are not used. |
| Who it's for | General contractors, self-performing GCs, specialty contractors (trades listed include concrete, excavation, electrical, mechanical, roofing, firestop, plumbing, structural steel) and project owners; heavy civil is listed. | General contractors' accounting and finance teams collecting pay apps and waivers from subs; also specialty contractors billing GCs (vendor wording). |
| Pricing (as publicly stated) | Basic is free for all stakeholders (5 T&M tags and 5 CORs per month, unlimited projects, mobile app, Bulk AI Import). Standard (unlimited CORs and T&M tags, change notifications, analytics, rate management, custom AI COR reason categories) and Professional (API, integrations, allowances, multi-office, Single Sign On) are through Contact Sales. The pricing FAQ says Standard and Professional carry a per-user fee plus a platform fee per project, licensed at the project, office or company level; first-level stakeholders you invite get Plus free on those plans, a free managed pilot is offered, and tailored enterprise agreements are available on request. | Not publicly listed for general contractors (request a demo or get in touch; no figures). The FAQ says Trimble Pay is 100% free for subcontractors submitting documents when invited by a primary contractor. |

Where the vendor descriptions differ
- Which document each handles: Clearstory centers on change order requests (CORs) and digital T&M tags, with COR logs shared between parties, rate libraries, allowances and contingencies, backcharges and analytics such as days aging and ball in court. Trimble Pay centers on the monthly billing cycle: collecting AIA pay apps from subcontractors and checking them for accuracy, calculating billing amounts once subs enter labor and material costs, one-click approval of pay apps and lien waivers, unconditional waivers held in escrow until payment, and compliance tracking with expiration dates.
- Where they meet: an approved change order usually ends up on a later pay app. Clearstory lists ERP and PM integrations; Trimble Pay lists CMiC, Procore, Sage 300, Trimble Spectrum and Trimble Vista. Whether the two connect to each other is not stated on the pages we read; ask both vendors.
- AI (vendor statements): Clearstory lists four agents: COR Pricing (open beta, drafts a COR from a voice note, a takeoff or your own priced estimate), T&M Tag (open beta, drafts a tag from a voice note with Spanish-to-English translation), COR Review (closed beta, checks incoming CORs against your checklist and approved rates) and Change Notification (open beta). It says AI can be turned off for the company or per project and that customer data is never used to train public or private AI models. The Trimble Pay pages we read do not describe AI.
- Who pays: Clearstory says Basic is free for all stakeholders. Trimble Pay's FAQ says it is 100% free for subcontractors submitting documents when invited by a primary contractor, so the general contractor is the buyer.
- Pricing (read Nov 3, 2026): Clearstory Basic is free (5 T&M tags and 5 CORs a month, unlimited projects, mobile app, Bulk AI Import); Standard and Professional go through Contact Sales, with a per-user fee plus a platform fee per project. Trimble Pay publishes no prices for general contractors; the routes are Request Demo and Get in touch. See each tool page for detail.
- AI tags stay as listed on each tool page. Not used here: Clearstory's network, dollar-volume and time-saved figures, and Trimble Pay's testimonials, network counts and case-study processing-time figures (vendor material). Facts for both tools come from vendor websites (desk research).
